Hooking up a receiver to an amp?

Hello everyone, I have a question regarding hooking up an audio receiver to an amp. Can I use any Receiver as a pre amp or is there something specific I need to know? I am planning on using a Sunfire amp and looking to purchase a receiver for a pre amp.

Any receiver recommendation? I am going to purchase the LSI25's, LSI Center and LSI7's for the rear.

Welcome to the forum. Need to know what the other components are going to be:
    1. What's your budget?

    2. Do you plan on going w/ Blu-ray?

    3. What type/ brand of amp are you getting?
I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

How much do you want to spend, any problem with used? For the main stream latest models with HD audio and HDMI that have pre-outs there are the:
    Yamaha 663

    Yamaha 6160

    Pioneer 1018

    Onkyo 706

    Harmon Kardon 254

    Marantz 5003

With speakers with the capabilities of the LSi line you may not want to go with the entry level models to improve on the pre's SQ. But a lot of the added cost on the upper level AVR's will be for the amp section which you will not be using. If you are not limited to a lower price you should listen to the entry level offerings compared to the upper end to see if the added (if any)SQ is worth the cost.

Then there are the not so main stream or entry level AVRs: Nad, Rotel to name a couple that have true 4 ohm capabilities.

Or you could go to older models that may not give you HD audio decoding or HDMI.

So it really comes down to how much you want to spend, and which manufacturer's sound hits the sweet spot for you

just be sure your receiver has pre amp outs. it's a sad day when someone finds our their new receiver doesn't have pre amp outs for an external amp. :(

Sounds like your well on your way to a nice rig with Sunfire and LSI. Why bother with an AVR at all? Try searching for a good pre with the bells and whistles you need/want. The money you'll pay for amps in an avr (which will not be used with an external amp) could be put towards a nice pre.
