Out here on the Cape we don't have trash pick-up unless you hire a private hauler. So, this afternoon went to my local trash drop-off site (aka the "dump") for weekly trash unloading.

Visited the "gift house" which is a drop-off shed of potentially useable items for others to use/have for free. Usually full of CRAP, but I have grabbed some good vintage speakers (including pair of killer monster and amazingly efficient near mint vintage Sansui's last summer that are now filling a friend's barn with LOUD sound). They usually have some albums but rarely any worthy of even touching. Usually about 20-30 crappy lps of christmas and filthy/beat up classical and 60's stuff. Today i saw a few that looked interesting.

Grabbed a Leonard Cohen (Songs of Love and Hate), It's a Beautiful Day (self titled with White Bird), Larry Coryell (Lady Coryell, fairly rare), and two that just looked interesting. The first was Joe Bushkin "I Get a Kick Out of Porter" with a cool cover photo of the composer on a Grumman 1960's Navy Cougar jet. Seems he's also a pilot. Not valuable but very well done and very nice jazz renditions of Cole Porter.

The last one was the prize. It's a near mint original 1956 pressing of The Red Garland Trio: "A Garland of Red". Looked it up in the price guide and its worth about $200. To check accuracy, an ebay copy sold recently for $112 with a scratch. Mine plays perfect. Its also an SUPERB little jazz recording.

The other irony is that just last night my daughter (21 and home for spring break from UVM) was making me listen to Leonard Cohen (from the early 70's and kinda Tom Waits sound) on her ipod and telling me how much she likes his stuff. I don't know him at all and didn't even know that I've ever noticed any of his albums. Now I gots a free one (actually for her).

Ya just never know what's just around the corner...
