Listening to my 5B's in the office rig and there is no 'effing way a 20 year old speaker should sound this friggin' good. Dammit, Polk products just perform so well for so long and so far outside their respective price range.

I just am totally amazed at how good these middle of the line Monitors sound. Granted they have RD0's and a X-over upgrade. I am just simply amazed at how no matter what music I throw at them they throw such a great deep soundstage and have just the correct amount of bass. Vocals sound fantastic, very detailed, never harsh.

Rig consists of:

Adcom GCA 510 line stage integrated amp 50wpc
AMC DAC8 digital to analog converter
Chaintech AV150 soundcard set to Kernel Streaming (direct digital output)
Harmonic Technologies TOSLINK cable
FLAC files from music server played thru MEDIA MONKEY
DIY Shotgun style (double run quad twisted pair) Canare 4S8 speaker cables.
Signal Cable Analog 1 between DAC analog output input on integrated amp.

Really, it shouldn't sound so good. I continue to be amazed at the types of products Polk made/makes and the longevity. What an enjoyable system. Simply amazing :)

I agree. The fact that in most places you can get a pair of 5s for under $100 is some of the best sound you can get for money.

I have monitor 5's as well. I have found I love how they sound on my 70's vintage Pioneer amp. I have not done a thing to them, original tweets, xover's, etc. I payed 40.00 for mine and they cleaned up pretty nicely with a little Dr. Bonners and elbow grease. I will probably get rid of my RTA11TL's before I sell these.

Feelin the good Polk vibe now....

I feel the exact same way.... I don't understand how they do it..

So far my experience with Vintage Polks has been my best experiences ever. I've not had anything new from Polk that tickled my fancy. Lsi9's included..

It doesn't surprise me Brock, but I can't recall ever listening to a pair of 5Bs. If I did it would have been back during the years they were still being manufactured. I don't use my 7Bs often anymore but they are one heck of speaker. It gets me thinking though, I might just have to snag a pair of 5s the next time I see them nearby.

Thanks for the reminder that sometimes good things do come in small packages.

I have a pair of Monitor 5B's that I've had since new in '87 or '88 and have used them almost every day since then in various system configurations. I recently had my original Adcom GTP500/GFA535 (series I) repaired/upgraded and now have them driving the 5B's as well as a newly acquired pair of Monitor 5Jr+ (series I w/ the passive radiator) in a multi-stereo setup and they sound fantastic together! (5B's are in the front of the room with the 5Jr's in the rear, both on stands w/ a 3-degree back-tilt) The only service these speakers have seen is a recent tweeter upgrade to the RD0-194's (well worth it once they're broken in, btw) These particular speakers have a great synergy with the early Nelson-Pass designed Adcom GFA535 amp and pre-amp combo. btw, I found those 5Jr+'s on eBay for $36.00/pair and not a month later another set in similar near-mint condition sold for over $120.00!! :D crazy...

Shaking my head also. I hooked up the 7B's with the stands I got from Noel, and I don't know why would I want any other speaker. They sound amazingly good. They completely disappear, and the soundstage and imaging, you need to hear to believe. I close my eyes and I would swear the music comes from high floorstanders. They project the sound close to 2 feet above them, including the highs. Funny when I open my eyes and see that there is nothing where the sound is coming from. And no need of a sub with these. Love it.
