i finally took the subs out of the box and looked at them
the spider was cracked
why?
maybe i didnt break them in long enough?
im running them off of a bd1000
theyre mm120s
approximately 600w going to each speaker
but i turned the gain down when i was breaking them in
any comments?
thanks

u cracked the spider?????? i've seen messy looking spiders... unraveled nasty lookin ones but never a clean tear/break in a spider before.
u're talkin about the cloth-ish suspension at the base of hte cone right?
if that's torn that's frickin bad dude... like owch. i have no idea what would do that except over excursion... like WAY over exursion. The Artist formerly known as PoweredByDodge -
yeah, the yellow thing with all the ridges in it
kind of feels like a thick paper
yeah it was cracked on one about a half inch and a quarter in and the other one was cracked in one place about a quarter inch
could a air leak in the box have caused it?
box is made like a rock though
it was custom made to fit under the seat but i still have those cheap **** terminal cups that run from the amp to the terminal then from the terminal to the speaker
need to get rid of those
i was going to wait and see if i wouldnt have to send the subs back for whatever reason and then after a while i would chaulk it in
maybe i should run some chaulk around the inside of the box to make sure
but i dont know
looking forward to getting my new ones though

wow -- i dunno man.. i have no idea... u'd have to have a really BAD air leak and be putting a really LARGE amount of power (750 + ??) to make it excurt enough to tear teh spider...
i might be way off, but if i'm not wrong last time i ran a sub free air it did not move as much as a sub in a sealed box -- for some reason that sounds totally **** backwards tho .. u'd think the more air space / infinite air space you'd get more excursion.... i duno... no clue.
while u stillgot u're old ones i'd put them back in.. screw them down.... and just push on one of them to listen if u hear a whistle(or if hte speaker feels very very easy to push all the way to the "bottom".. if u dont.. there's probably no leak... ya know... even if there is some microscopic one... if u cant heart it / feel it, then it's not gonna cause u problems most likely. The Artist formerly known as PoweredByDodge -
actually ive already sent both back
i think im going to chaulk everything while im waiting
the amp was rated at 1236watts at 2 ohms
and when i was breaking them in i had the gain down
i dont know
theres no visible leaks
i think i might not have pushed them enough when i was breaking them in
so it didnt really break them in
then after i pushed them too hard
maybe that was it
hmmmm
looking forward to getting the new ones

Cracked spider is simply too much power. If teh subs were old and neglected, I'd say they just dried out and became brittle but they weren't. If you want to see spiders fail catastrophically, go get a cheap Pyle or Urban Audio sub and run way to much power through it. The Pyle drivers will get about 30-35 feet. The Urban Audio drivers don't go so far because the glue sucks and the dust cover in the center seperates and cause drag. We could only get about 20 feet with them.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

lmfao -- Urban Rat -- by Audiovox no less... i remember those!
30 feet? u mean u shot the cone right out of the basket?
holy ****... lol.The Artist formerly known as PoweredByDodge -
im almost tempted to do that and see what happens
lol
is the spider one of the parts that need to be broken in on these subs?
cuz i still think they cracked cuz i didnt break them in right
thanks for everything

Hey Cody what is your gain set at on your 1000bd amp? Also the bass boost knob? Thanks
-
bass knob:
all the way down
gain:
umm
i think its all the way up
that or a little less
-Cody -
all the way up ? thats not good... those are 250 millivolt - 8 volt tolerant or somethin like that.. unless your deck output is under half a volt, that's really driving the amp to the brink of doomsday... usually something around 2/3 is good for a deckwith a 4 v out. 8 - .25 = 7.75 * 2/3 = 5 .. 8 - 5 = 3 -- ... so 2/3 gain would be the tolerance for a 3 volt input which is more sensitive than say 1/2 gain which is the "ideal" for the 4 v in(in theory but rarely practice).
the only way to realy cheack it is on a scope - and the numbers above are really just for rough estimation. The Artist formerly known as PoweredByDodge -
thanks
ill turn the gain down 2/3-3/4 of the way
