Okay so I REALLY need to get off my fat **** and do something. I am setting some very small goals for myself. But I am looking for a new bike. I have a Trek Mountain Bike right now, but I want a little more versatility. Plus the Trek is over 10 years old and is very heavy.
So I am looking at getting a Redline Cyclocross. It has everything I am looking for, plus I am getting an entry level one, so if I really enjoy it I can upgrade it, or trade it off for a better one. But my plan is to ride the hell out of it for a few good years.
Being in AZ, we can go from asphalt to gravel real fast, thats why I was looking at it. Any one have some thoughts on Cyclocross bikes in general?

Redline eh? I remember owning, my first freestyle bike and it was a Redline then to a Haro Team Master...sorry for the slight derail. I'm happy with my Giant, but it is a MTB, so I can't comment on your post...

No derail, I always have liked the redline products. For me though I went the Diamondback route when I used to BMX. I believe it was a Silver Streak. My buddies that I hung with at the local track raced with PK Rippers, Redlines, Haro's, and there were a few Mongoose's around.
One thing I have to say, is I went through two Diamondbacks, and I lived on those bikes for 5-6 years. Thats all I did was BMX. And whats amazing is the track that we built in the mid-80's is still there today. A lot of kid hours were put into that field.

The field is just to the left (west) of the lake. We built the upper portion of the trails. -
doood! get your ride on before the hotter temps hit. guaranteed to stop you in your tracks. everytime i get into mtn biking again the summer rolls around and kicks me off my habit.
come to think of it, SPRING forces me to search for excersize elsewhere.

Hi,
I have a cross bike and like it a lot. I use it to commute and to ride in teh rain. (fenders are good!) I bought it when we lived in eastern washington. There are lots of rides in the wheat fields so road to dirt was teh fun rides. I have a steel frame but most are aluminum. A cross bike is a good choice as long as you dont need the fastest bike and want a wide choice of tires. . If you do then get a road bike.Main system: Lyngdorf TDAI 2170 w/ Pioneer 42" plazma-> Polk LSiM 703 w/Tivo, Marantz tuner, BRPTT: Nothingham Spacedeck-> Pioneer PL L1000 linear arm-> Soundsmith DL 103R-> SUT->Bottlehead ErosDigital: I3 PC w/ Jriver playing flac -> Sonore Ultrarendu -> Twisted Pair Audio ESS 9028 w/ Mercury IVY Vinyl rips: ESI Juli@24/192-> i3 PC server -
This thread is unreal.... I happen to have received my first "good" bike this summer, which turned out to be a Redline cyclocross - the Conquest Sport (their entry level cc bike). Did my research, and found out that cyclocross bikes are the most versatile (I live in SoCal, so there are plenty of summer dirt bike trails around). You get the benefits of drop-bars, and the durability of a off-road frame.

Dues...do you mind me asking what you paid for the Conquest Sport? -
Well, its MSRP is $700....but I picked up last year's model at the LBS for $399....they were trying to get rid of the stock....lucked out!

It was the 07' make (but in blue) -

Nice price! I wish I could score one that low. Cheapest I am finding is 620 shipped. -
One other thing Dues...if you have a picture of your bike please post.

I really like my Trek alot, and it's not even their high end model.

I race a redline conquest pro with Sram rival. Bikes hold up very well considering the abuse they get during a cyclocross race. had mine for two years and only thing i have had to replace is a broken saddle and carbon seatpost. great bike.Receiver Yamaha 3070 *Emotiva xpa5 * Behringer iNuke 6000dsp *Monster Cable HTS 3500 -- line conditioner * Panamax 5300 * Apple 4K * Panasonic UB820 * JVC NX5 * Silver Ticket thin bezel 120”

I'll try to get some if I can spare some time! -
Thanks Dues, no big deal if you dont. I have yet to see an "actual" picture of one.

You can get a REALLY nice bike on craigslist or ebay for a fraction of the going price, then have a bike shop do a $150 maintenance service on it. I paid $900 about 3 years ago for a Cannondale Super V 900 (I know, older!), but it's a great piece of machinery. They guy I bought it from had put over $3,000 into it:
I've probably put 3,000 miles on this bike.TNRabbit

Yeah TNR that is what I am looking at. I have been browsing the ads at roadbikereview, and ebay. I have looked on Craigslist, but have not found anything yet. -

The link actually has a decent pic....when I'm done with all my schoolwork, I'll try to snap a few shots of mine.... -
Try ebay I've seen lots of bike sellers there.avelanchefan wrote: »Okay so I REALLY need to get off my fat **** and do something. I am setting some very small goals for myself. So I scored huge on ebay yesterday.
First off I was patient. Went around to the local bike shops and tried to find something that suited me. I found a few nice Fuji Comp/Cross bikes but they were just a tad out of reach price wise. I looked hard into road bikes also but just could never find the right deal for me, or if I did find the right bike at a store it was either to large or to small for me.
So I really started getting agressive with craigslist and ebay. Just checking them as often as possible. Started seeing some deals pop up on craiglist over the weekend, but by the time I contacted the sellers the bikes would be sold.
Late yesterday afternoon I got back on ebay after looking at a few more bike shops and I stumbled upon a Trek XO2 cyclocross on ebay. It is a 2008 model with very low miles, and it retails at over 2500 dollars. The seller took off the Sram deraillers and exchanged them for XTR shimanos, he also did some odd configurations on the handle bars. I had a buddy from work look at it (hardcore road biker) and he felt like it was a great deal. Also said he has a box full of extra parts, and we can configure it different from the current setup.
So I placed a bid on it and scored it for $564. I dont know if the guy put it in the wrong catagory or what but I was shocked that no one bid on it but me. I have seen Trek XO1's go for 900+. I figure...what the heck, if I don't like the bike I know I will get money out of it to get something I like better. So stoked to ride it, I just hope the guy does not flake on me!

Well the seller did not flake on me. I am sure he is upset, but he came through. He sent me UPS tracker information today.
Insanely happy about the deal I got! -
Nice!!! (except for the bars')
Is XTR MTB derail?....

The bars are number one priority...that tape is gone ASAP.
XTR is MTB. I know the guy (gal?) swapped the original XO2 components for the stuff he put on. But still, that setup has got to be way more than what I payed. The frame alone is in the 500 range, so eventually I can piece back together a great riding bike. Heck the generic Motobecanes are going for the price i paid for the Trek.
Not that what he has on it is bad (XTR is top of the line for MTB), but I will make it more into a roadie. Who knows though I may like the current setup the way it is. It just needs three things. 1) Tape (duh!) 2) Pedals and 3) New shifters (Not to keen on the bar end shifters).
A fellow friend of mine who is a CX rider loved it and basically told me to ride that thing into the ground and get a new one in 3 or 4 years. Just have fun on it. -
So it has been a long process setting this up. But I am near the end to where I can make this my every day rider. I need a few more accessories to complete it. Like bottle cages, tubes, fat man bibs.....etc. Got clipless pedal and shoes, I just want to get my legs back in shape before I go down that road.
I have ridden it a few times and really love the ride, plus it is much lighter than expected. It weighs about 19 pounds, definitely not a full carbon bike, but it is three pounds lighter than the fuji crosscomp I was looking at which ran at 22 pounds.
Also still waiting to hear from the seller about the UPS settlement. Not holding my breath, but you never know. -
Has anyone tried a Felt or Scott road bike?
-
Guess I shouldn't even mention my Schwinn Ranger. It is going to turn 6 this year. I think the rear axle bearings are crapping out, they are starting to click under light climbing, and heavy acceleration. My other bike is my toy( to be my son's when he can show me he can take care of stuff) it's a GT Performer. I Bought it at a garage sale last summer for 10 bucks. It was all original. I have new tires and tubes on it. Going to have to replace brake pads all the way around. I'm also going to have to find new tensioners for the brake handles.

My wife and I just went for a trail ride today. Lot of fun! But a little sunburned.

Consider having your seat level with the ground.
I noticed in your photos that the seat pointed down. This may help reduce your **** pain but your shoulders will get very sore.
Have fun
