I'm in the process od building my home theater setup. I just ordered a pair of the T90e towers that i'll use for the fronts. I going to run the CS20 for center and OWM3 for surrounds, im undecided on the sub. I'm looking at the Klipsch sub-12 and the ED AD2-300. Anyway I need to get a receiver and I have been looking at specs for the new Yamaha RX-V465 and wanted some opinions for this setup. I plan on only running 5.1 and the yamaha puts out 105 watts per channel, 4 hdmi inputs and it also decodes TrueHD and HD master audio all for $300 shipped. What do you think?

Thanks

I happen to love yamaha, but have come to the slow conclusion that they tend to be a bit harsh in the higher frequencies when used in stereo mode. They are fantastic in the home theater modes and are tough to beat for the price. If you intend on any sort of upgrading later at least look at one that allows for pre-outs. I am also pleased to welcome you to CLUB POLK!!! beware however as these guys can help you spend more than you ever intended:D

Actually these guys have saved my a@@ more than once as well... anyway welcome!

I agree with nooshinjohn. I have an RX-V861 Yammie and it is incredible for home theater but I am not totally sure of the 2 channel mode, although it isn't terrible. You definatly want to ensure you get pre-outs as you may want to bi-amp eventually.

    good luck

bevans, myself I would look hard at finding a Yamaha RX-V663, probably could be had for $350 if you look hard enough and watch for sales. Here is a comparison link for the 2:

    465/663

I think it would serve you much better for a little more $$.

I agree with this as the one you are looking at does not have pre/out or proper binding posts for your center and rear channels...

Here are a couple links for you if you are bored :D but might proove helpful for you. The first one started out on the ^^% but kind of turned into general info on Yamahas' new line up. Take a close look at post number 40, it looks like 6th Ave might still discount the 663 to $350 if you join AVS.

    665

This link is to tons of pages of info on the 663 if you want to read this much of AVS postings.:rolleyes:http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=995796

thanks for all the advice. My only reservations about the 663 are (1) they only have 2 HDMI inputs vs 4 on the 465 and (2) the 663 produces 95 watts per channel vs 105 watts per channel on the 465. This will be my first home theater setup and I want to purchase a great receiver, but I honestly have no clue about most of the features. I dont know what "bi-amping" or "bi-wiring" is. I'm just hoping I will know how to setup whichever receiver I go with. I know the 465 is a 1.3 hdmi version. I already have a cable DVR and PS3 i'm running HDMI on and with all the new technology going to HDMI the 2 inputs on the 663 kinda worries me about future expansion. I'm not trying to be difficult please inform me if i'm looking at this the wrong way. I just thought since I was only running a 5.1, why not save some coin and go with cheaper 465 with higher wattage and more hdmi inputs.

    Thanks

Having the preouts gives you the option to add more power. I seriously doubt the 10W difference between these 2 AVR's is very significant. If you need more HDMI inputs, you could always use an external switch box. It's your money, but I would highly recommend you invest in an AVR with preouts.

    Keep in mind that the 663/6160 is 95W X 7 = 665W total vs 105W X 5 = 525W total.

Agree with Keiko 100% on this, i owned the 663 for awhile, great receiver! the pre-outs were a great feature to have when i added my amp. You yourself said it in regards to being worried about " future expansion". You will kick yourself later not having this feature, you wont notice the 10 watt difference between units, you will notice nice clean power with an ext. amp. As Keiko mentioned a switch box is a great alternative to add more Hdmi inputs later, rather than skimp out on the pre-outs for that feature alone.:D

    Actually,

I think you may notice a bit of a difference between the 465 and the 663...I believe the 663 has a somewhat larger transformer and a higher current peak capacity that might give your speakers not a great difference in loudness but in gravitas.

The newer model Yamahas have had their weight scaled way down. Somewhere on this site I have a post that talks about the differences between the new 665 and the 663..something like Yamahas go on a diet? The 663 has a more powerful amplification.

As Keiko said 10W is not much on an AVR. Also I think that 105W on the 465 is @ 1kHz where as the 663's 95W is 20Hz - 20kHz.

Don't get me wrong the 465 may fit your needs, but don't let the power rating be a BIG point for you. If you think you want power then it might actually be a better reason to look at the 663 because of the pre outs. Then you can add as much power as you want.:D I do think that if you stick with the speakers listed in you OP the 465 would be able to drive them, just not to high levels.

Apparently, the Onks and the Yammies attended weight loss camp over the summer.

I will take my Onk 805 over the new 806 any day.
