Computer sound?

I've got a spare 50watt rms stereo reciever laying around and I want to put it to good use replacing the abysmal 2.1 speakers that came with my computer. I've already decided on the sub - Sony SAWM20. I know it won't piss off the neighbors, but 28hz for $100 is an excellent value I think and it's probably louder than any computer sub. That leaves the mains - I mostly would use the system for mp3s and sometimes games. I don't want or need 5.1, so surround speakers are not an issue. The only place the mains would fit is on my relatively large computer desk. That leaves about 3-4 feet of space between the listener and the speakers so they definately can't be bright or harsh in any way. There is a printer on the desk that is not going anywhere so they can't be more than about 7"x7"x11" at the most. They also have to be "female friendly" so nothing too odd looking. I won't spend more than $100 dollars at most, something around $50-$80 would be mainly what I would consider. Main qualities I look for in a speaker are detail, warmth, clarity, imaging, and "slam factor". (Don't forget magnetic shielding!) Any suggestions?
My sound card is Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 64V running at full quality sample rate - should I upgrade that too? I really don't want to tear apart my comp but I could if if had to.
To give an idea of where I'm trying to fit the mains:

Or perhaps I could put them on the shelves (there's one on each side) which limits the size to 5.5" wide and 10" high, has worse acoustics, and makes rear-firing ports unworkable but frees up desk space.

(Sorry about the quality, I took the pics with a cheapo webcam I got free)
