Upconvert DVD player connections/settings

I just picked up a Philips 3960 upconverting DVD player for ten bucks from a guy at work.
I hooked it up last night to our Vizio 37" HDTV - HDMI from the player to the TV; digital coax from the player to my (non HDMI) HT receiver; and, because I already had the cables run for my old DVD player, I went ahead and hooked up the component video and analog audio from the player to the TV.
I think I know the answer already, but my question is about choosing either digital or PCM audio out for the DVD player.
If I choose digital output, then I get the digital signal at my receiver, but no sound through the TV via the HDMI input. At the same time, I get both video and audio via the component video / analog audio connections to the TV.
If I choose PCM audio out on the player, I get audio via the HDMI input to the TV, but no digital signal via the digital coax to the receiver.
I looked over the TV manual and the settings, and I don't think there is any way to combine an HDMI video input with an analog audio input. And, I think, because the TV doesn't have a dolby digital decoder, I can't use the digital audio via the HDMI cable at all.
My solution right now is, set the player's output to digital: select the component video input on the TV to watch movies if we want the sound from the TV only; select the HDMI video to the TV to have upconversion, and have to use the HT receiver for sound.
Given the limitations of the TV and the player (e.g. the player apparently can't output the PCM audio via HDMI while at the same time outputting the digital audio via the coax), do I just live with what I have now? Or am I missing something?

If I understand what you're saying correctly, you can only output audio via HDMI or digital. You can't have the player output through both simultaneously. It's like this on my Yammie player which I believe uses the same interface as Phillips.
What I do is use HDMI for video straight to my TV and use digital coax to my receiver for audio. The same as what you are doing now. So in essence, you have it correct.

Thanks for the replies.
I don't think it is a matter of digital coax or HDMI; it is a matter of digital (from both) or PCM.
If I switch the player's output to PCM, I get sound via the HDMI at the TV but no signal on the digital coax.
Looks like what I have is what I live with. It'll work.
Thanks again.
