Polk Audio Studio 10's

Can someone please tell me if my Polk Audio Studio 10's floor speakers are considered vintage? I have owned them for almost 20 years and they sound as good as the day I bought them. I know when I bought them the sales person told me they were a top selling speaker. I am sure Polk no long makes them corrrect? What is the current status on Studio 10's?

What's the driver configuration in those?

You should look at this Polk link and see if you can find your model number. It's not an S10 is it? The link also tells you if something is vintage or not. Certainly a speaker that old must be. Anyone else know???

I would have to look up the info to find the driver info. On the back of the speakers they say "Polk Audio Monitor Series 2". They are 10's too. I just ran a search on Google and these suckers have gotten some good ratings!

Also does anyone know where I can pick up some Polk Audio Face Plates? After all of these years and moves the Polk Audio name plates have broken and fallen off the front of these suckers

Monitor 10 Series II. Mine were dated 1990, so you're 20 year guess is probably correct. They were the last iteration of the Monitor 10's. I loved mine... sold them to my brother when I got my SDA's.

Yeah, I'd consider them vintage. I've never heard the Monitor 10's before, but I have a pair of Monitor 7A's. They're essentially the same speaker as the Monitor 10's, minus one of the mid-woofers. Some great sounding speakers.

Have you considered doing some crossover mods, or swapping to the RD0 tweeters? I haven't done it on mine yet, but I'm planning on doing some crossover mods on mine later this year. From everything I've gathered, it's like a night and day difference.

I've got the Peerless tweeters in mine though, so no need to swap tweets out.:cool:

As for the emblems, keep your eye on ebay. They pop up on there fairly frequently.

OMG those are my speakers!! Monitor 10 Series II from Circa 1990. Mine are in perfect condition exept for the fact that I lost my Polk Audio "Name Plates". Bummer...Where can I buy some to glue back on?

I have not considered mods on these since in my opinion they sound great! However I will begin the research and see what it takes. If it is not and day difference I might want to do it since it has been 20 years. I orignally had bought Klipsh speakers with a sub in the rear. I didn't like them because I didn't have them set in a corner and I was losing all of my bass into the open dining room area of my house at the time. I took them back for these Polk Audio Monitor 10s Series 2. I never looked back. I guess these past 20 years just flew by. I don't even look at them as vintage but I guess they are now in that category.

Well, the monitor 10 series is quite old on it's own. Your particular speakers might not be ancient, but I'm pretty sure they started making the 10's in the early 70's. There were original Monitor 10's, then 10a's, then 10b's, then these, the Series II's.

I went to Best Buy today to have a look around. I noticed that all new Polk Speakers are now tall and very skinny. No long the shape of my Monitor 10's Series 2. Why are all new speakers shaped in this long tall narrow body? have they found this is a better design for transforing sound?

no, but it takes up less valuable floor space and they have a higher wife appeal as a result. as far as sounding better, thats up to the listener to decide.

That's because people today value aesthetics more than actual sound quality in general. The taller skinnier cabinets are easier for most people to live with than the behemoths of old.

Personally, I like humongous speakers. The more floor space they take up, the better, IMO.

Good point on the wife factor though. My wife hates speakers, wires of any type. I also hear you Curt about the vintage speakers that take up lots of floor space. I think I will hold onto my Monitor 10's as long as possible!! They may even outlive me some day....How long can a speaker last?

I love my Polks!!! Who are the top three speaker companies (Besides Boise) out in the market place these days? I suspect Polk Audio is becoming more main stream these days. Back when I bought them in the 1990's at a specialty CE retailer.

Would Klipsh and Boston Accoustics round off the top three?

Probably JBL, Infinity and Bose, but Polk should be in the top 5 with Klipsch. Just a guess from what's available at the few B&Ms left standing.
