USB or optical audio interfaces-recommendations?

Hello,

My Griffin iMic developed a high pitched hum which nothing could remove even with nothing plugged into it. Griffin's tech support tells me that it's toast. So I am looking for recommendations to replace it.

My sole purpose for this device is to transfer two channel analog audio to my MacBook Pro, digitizing tapes and LPs for iTunes and CDs. I have no need of inputs for microphones or instruments. My MBP has S/PDIF in and out. I use a Toslink adaptor & cable for output to my receiver. Would optical into the MBP be superior to USB? I couldn't tell any difference on the output side compared to the USB iMic. My receiver has optical inputs but no optical outputs.

So what is the best in class for these requirements (just so I know)? Is there any real difference between the best and the affordable options like the M-Audio Transit?
