If you go MAC, you need MAC pre (.PREIOD)! Mac Amps works best with MAC Pre.

    Go Parasound or SunFire.

If you do decide to go for it, just use it to power your mains/center and one pair of surrounds for the time being. Cut it down to 5.1 until you can get a 2 ch. amp for the mains.

I just reduced my setup from 7.1 to 5.1 recently, and it really doesn't make that big of a difference IMO. After about 10 minutes of listening you're used to it. Most soundtracks aren't even in 7.1 yet anyway, so all you're really hearing is a 5.1 soundtrack with an extra pair of surround speakers the great majority of the time.

I think McIntosh is a couple of steps up the audio food chain over the Sunfire. Some may disagreed but I have always been a big fan of McIntosh and the BIG BLUE METERS!

I highly doubt you would need an additional amp for the fronts unless your a 7.1 guy. Mac is very conservative in published power output and I believe you would be stunned once you heard it, although I am slightly biased towards the blue meters :D

No doubt about that but most (mid-fi) pre from other brands will not do any good justice for most MAC amps.

I tried several different pre on Mac amps without a good result.

I haven't tried a lot of MAC amps yet but so far, the MACs I come across works best with MAC pre. ;)

I've been through 2 Mac preamps, one a hot rodded vintage model and one that was discontinued a year or two ago, both SS. Both were too colored and dark sounding for me. I wouldn't mind getting my ears on one of their newer tube models, I hear they have more life to them.

    As always, YMMV.

As for their amps, I'll take anything made after 1990.

All the MACs I came across in the past are pre-90s and all SS too. But I doubt much has changed till the models come out after 2000s. Old MAC gears are very warm for my taste and I sold them after a few weeks in my 2 channel rig.

I read a few reviews on this amp and it gets either praise or distain from all that I can tell... perhaps its best that I step back for a bit and not rush things on getting anything.

It's fine for HT. For 2 channel, you want an autoformer based model.

From my understandings, most of the complaints come from the owners with MAC amps driven by PRE other than MACs. I don't know what the hell they did but almost all different PRE I tried doesn't sound as good as it's driven by MAC PRE from my experiences.

I had the B&K pre that I gave up as a Karma here as the pre on my MC352 for quite awhile and it was a very pleasing combination to me. It could have stayed there had I not wanted some tubes in the mix that's why I went with a C2200 which was several steps ahead of the B&K.

Sumphin's a little fishy with this seller. "Mcintosh MC7205 200W THX per 5-Channel Amplifier BOXES" is what's listed in the ad. Later on in the ad......"I HAVE THE ORIGINAL BOXES BUYER WILL NEED TO GET ALSO INSURANCE NOT LISTED ON SHIPPING PRICE" WTF did he say?

It seems as if he's trying to sell a box. Some of his feedback is questionable as well. I'm not saying he's out to get anybody, I'm just saying that you might want to take a closer look at all of the information presented to you before you make an offer.

+1 to what Tom said. The guy is unclear in his description and not a single word about the condition of the amp in the ads.

He looks like he does a lot of auto sales through ebay. Given his response to why he's selling his McGear (he has 2 other high end systems and they are moving), he is probably making a prretty good living doing so.

I wouldn't suspect any funny business. Although for a guy to do as much selling on eBay as he does, you'd think he'd clean the english up a little.

ePray is always a risk. Its inherent and the price you might win an item for reflects that.
Do you hear that buzzing noise?

It just sounds like his English and grammar may need some work. Most Mac items are shipped in two boxes. The inner box either have a piece of wood or very thick piece of hardboard that the unit is bolted down to, it works pretty well for preventing damage.

That's a lot of cash to put out now, N-john. I'd take a DEEP breath and THINK about it! Yeah people rave about those but will your wallet thank you? Don't know what you all do for a living but where I come from my wife would whack me with a frying pan if I dropped that much at once?

Of course if you've got the cash, that's another story!

But I'd try to 'calm' myself, first.
