SurroundBar50 + ??
Hello Polkites*
Nice forum here Have lurked for a little while.
About me: brand spanking new to HT, never owned an AV receiver or any speakers worth the name. Currently planning a renovation and wanting to achieve a half-decent setup. Constraints: lack of knowledge, wife, bank account
The room: approx 10m (30ft) square. 2.7m (9ft) height. Open plan. The lounge/viewing area is in one quadrant of this room. Panasonic plasma panel (currently 42"; later 50"?) will be wall mounted, with main seating approx 12-13 feet opposite. Glazed doors on left of seating area, approx 7-8 feet away. (Far) wall on right of seating area is 14-15 feet away. Open behind the seating area (kitchen behind).
Main use is movies. Very limited music. WAF dictates primarily a non-wired solution. My researches brought me to the Surround Bar series (I ruled out the Yamaha DSPs since I figured I don't have enough walls to bounce anything suitably). I also figured the size of the room probably meant the SB50 was a better option than the original SB. Will match with a subwoofer, probably PSW110 or PSW111.
After reading the SB thread several times, I started to wonder about getting wiring done for in-ceiling speakers as rear surrounds for a composite 7.1 system. I looked through the Polk range of in-ceiling speakers.
My questions:
1. Is the PSW 111 powerful enough for the room? Or should I be looking at one of the micropro DSWs?
2. Would the RC80i work as the rear surrounds, and be a reasonable match for the SB50? Or would something from the SC series be better?
3. What receiver? So far I've considered the Yamaha RX-V663 or 863; Onkyo TX-SR606 and 706; and Pioneer VSX1018AH. Open to other suggestions.
I don't have a set budget as such (meaning I don't yet know what I'll be able to afford after the reno budget gets sorted out) but I'm looking for a firmly mid-range setup.
Thanks in advance,
S.A

1. No. MicroPro or DSW. I like the DSW600 and it keeps the budget within reason.
2. Either the TC or SC would be fine for a rear application, in conjuction with the SB50.
3. Any of those options are fine.
Your idea of wired in rear 7.1 surrounds is excellent and I'd definitly go that route.
Polkies.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
Thanks dorokusai.
Another q: Are the DSWs' power supply multi-voltage? Local voltage for me is 240v (downunder). -
