I just bought the RM705 series and was wondering what receiver would work best with it?

Any high current receiver that has pre-outs, so you can upgrade later.

    That includes:
    Onkyo 705/6
    Yamaha 663
    Harman Kardon AVR 254
    Pioneer 1018
    etc.

Most of these are in the mid-price category and can be had for between 350-500 dollars depending on the model. You need to listen to some of these to see what sound 'you' like

I prefer 'warm' so I'd choose the Onkyo or Harman Kardon

For me Warm means smoother highs not so forward or in your face. Some people like a lot of edgy detail in their highs, I don't. That's personal, subjective.

All the receivers mentioned above can decode Tru-HD sound formats from a blu-ray player. Blu-ray has 7.1 capability. Meaning that you should get a receiver that can power 7 surround speakers. Currently your speaker set up is a 5.1 which is OK because all 7.1 receivers can be configured as 5.1s.

All receivers above are 7.1. You should stay with that for future proofing even if you don't use it right now.

That's a money issue. You can buy a good DVD player for almost nothing but a good blu-ray is still in the 300 or so neighborhood.

For now you might want to consider a good DVD player for 50-100. And get the blu-ray later. Blu-ray prices ARE FALLING.

Blu-ray Players can also play standard DVDs and CDs...though..

In movies encoded with 7.1 soundtracks, the surrounds have side R&L and rear R&L channels instead of just rear R&L channels. This is great if you have a long room with plenty of space between your seating area and the rear wall as the side channels can fill that space better. If your room is more square and you sit close to your back wall, then 5.1 is a better choice.

Any 7.1 receiver will do great 5.1 sound if the 2 rear channels don't have speakers attached, it will sense this and give only 5 channels of sound.

Blu-Ray is sort of a waste unless you have a TV that can handle the extra picture quality provided.

Ok, now I am understanding a bit more. Would the Ontyo 7.1 500 series sound ok with what i have? Or should I go with the 700 series?

The 500 series has no pre-outs. And its HDMIs (in later models) will not pass audio for blu-ray. If that's not an issue for you (see above) then sure that would work.

Personally I'd spend the extra money, if you have it on the 705/6. But if you don't the Onkyo 506 is a good entry level receiver for a basic system.

    DG,

Our room is 13x25 and we sit 12' from the tube. I was going with 2 rears above and behind seating area but would it make sense to go with sides around the seating area and rears at far end of the room(i.e. 13' behind seating area)?

    I respectfully disagree Dennis.

My TV is an older LG 32" LCD w/ 720p. Even with my El Cheapo Samsung 1500 BDP ($250), Blu Ray Discs have better video than DVDs. Of course, I'm not getting the full Blu Ray video resolution that I would if I could afford a new 1080p TV.

Another benefit of my BDP is that it does DVD better than my $80 Toshiba upconverter DVDP.

I see that we agree...... it is sort of a waste, not a total loss of $$$ spent, but not anywhere close to HD. I stated my position without even knowing what TV is used. Your 720P TV is still HD, and miles above most peoples standard sets that wouldn't notice improvement over standard DVDs.

In a long room, 7.1 works the best, even though very few of the movies have 7 channel content. The side speakers carrying the same signal tend to fill the 25 ft gap between your fronts and rears. On 7.1 material, it is a whole new world of surround.

    VSX-03THX $625
    SC-05 $899
    SC07 $1299

If you happen to live within 200 miles from this place, you can get yourself a Pioneer Elite Recevier for an amazing price.

Those are all great receivers but outside of the VSX-01. I think we're out of his price range there!

    An 05 for 899...that's a steal!!

well I have a 37" LCD that is about a year old, dont remember if its 720 or 1080 though. We are getting a blu ray at the end of the summer so I guess it would be smarter to go ahead and get the 7.1 and the 700 series... does polk even make a receiver? seems like they would offer it with it lol.....

No Polk doesn't do receivers. If you're going to go blu-ray as Mike says above, you WILL see a difference at 720p or 1080i/p.

The 700s are a good choice but that Pioneer 01 Elite is also a nice receiver if you can get it for the price metal lists above. Or even the 03! I'd check that link out.

PAM3LARR welcome to CP. The 5xx series would be fine with those speakers. It sounds like this is your first venture into home theater, many start like this with a basic system that sounds so good and is so enjoyable they find themselves upgrading much if not all of the equipment (sometimes very quickly). While the Onkyo 5xx series and RM 705 will give you good performance, the receivers/AVRs mentioned are not much more than the 5xx and its competitors in price. It all depends on your budget, but what the others have offered with suggestions is trying to give you a good lower to mid level AVRs that offer much more options for the future than the 5xx, for only a little more.
However there is always "a little more" no matter what you are spending. The larger amps, added features and pre outs on the suggested AVRs gives you a lot of versatility to upgrade, many times if you choose, without needing to purchase a new AVR. Which I have to agree with 100%.
