USS New York

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the

World Trade Center.

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, 'those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,' recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. 'It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.'

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the 'hair on my neck stood up.' 'It had a big meaning to it for all of us,' he said 'They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back.'

The ship's motto? 'Never Forget'

I want to hear about every major op from this ship against the terrorist bastages.

"In landing operations, retreat is impossible, to surrender is as ignoble as it is foolish. Above all else remember that we as attackers have the initiative, we know exactly what we are going to do, while the enemy is ignorant of our intentions and can only parry our blows. We must retain this tremendous advantage by always attacking rapidly, ruthlessly, viciously, and without rest."

God bless this ship and all who sail upon her, and may her legacy serve the memory of those lost with honor, reverance and dignity...

Ok, Maybe I'm missing something - - - but why is this "anti terrorism" vessel lacking light turrets?

She's packin' trust me... the design is a bit more stealthy than past ships

Zero, you obviously don't get it... nothing will get close to the USS New York unless the Captain wants it to.

Eh, packing what? hopes and dreams? It's a cool ship and all, but it looks like someone in a freaking paddle boat can take it out if they were determined enough - and you don't need a radar to see it from that perspective either.

guns are remote turrets on bow and stern. missile batteries, as well as other weapons systems are concealed behind doors to help with stealth. the ship as mentioned carries 700 battle ready MARINES!!! and supports strike helicopter operations.

She is not a designated armed combat ship in the classic sense however as her LPD designation indicates. put simply, she is meant to deliver the goods, and defend herself if needed

Trust me, after the USS Cole bombing, if YOU think you can get that close to it-
    Go for it:D

Me personally, I have an aversion to 20mm depleted URANIUM shells:eek:
They tend to go through things.....like armor, flesh, pretty much anything that gets in their way;)

I had no idea that 'steel' was being reclaimed in this way. But it's an interesting tribute to all those who lost their lives that day. Regardless of what one's politics might be. Here is one example of something that can unite us.

Sean... milk from mine nose just short-circuited my 'puter. End transmission.
That said, much respect to those that serve.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Sean... did you flip the bat when you hit it out of the park? Or did you go all "Hammerin' Hank" and take the most dignified way around the bases? I think you chose the latter.
