Rti8 tweeter blown
Anyone else have new Rti8's with blown tweeter? I bought these new, ran them gently to break them in, and blew a tweeter when I put the volume about half way on a Sony 100w x 2 receiver. I had infinity Rs4's for about 8 years, ran them the same way with no trouble at all.
Spoke to a Polk rep, he told me that running them gently was the reason the tweeter blew, then told me that the receiver at half way was full power and that's why they blew...Sounded to me like both explanations were contradicitons in themselves. If an $800 pair of towers can't handle half the power coming out of a sony perhaps I should go back to my 100 watt single driver 6.5 infinity's? There was no distortion coming from these either...

You broke your speakers in by turning up a Sony "100 x2" receiver half-way? Underpowering your speakers with that Sony sounds like the culprit Jstout. You clipped them to death.

sorry your RTi8 tweeter blew.. but that is pretty loud in most cases turning up your receiver to half way.
I am just curious what model of Sony are you using?
Running a speaker gently won't blow a tweeter.. cranking it loud without proper amplification will though. I think you might have been hitting distortion from your Sony.. and that will kill speakers.
It's also possible something was wrong with the speaker that blew the tweeter. Or somehow a power "spike" got into the speaker wire and fried the tweeter.. something similar happen to me a few years back.. in my case it fried the crossover.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

a 100 W x2 sony receiver sounds pretty wimpy. sony is known to inflate their numbers and if its one of their stereo receivers chances are its pretty entry level. as a previous person said it was probably clipping.... which is meaning its sending out more power than it can cleany provide but with distortion which may or may not be audible.KEF Q150 | Rythmik F12 | Yamaha Aventage RX-A780

Most of the times Sony will never post proper figures in their specs, reminds me of another speaker company, Just check the THD ratings at 1kHz am sure it will be way too high, and also at 20 - 20kHz it may double, That may be the reason for the blown tweeter

Make sure it isn't the crossover. I smoked ( literally ) a crossover in my LSI.
Take the back out and look for burnt-black resistors. -
Hate to hi-jack thread but I just called C/S and told them that all 3 of my tweeters were blown. Over the weekend everything went muffled, in otherwords no highs from the front but plenty from my sides...he said to mail them to the address from the warranty paper found inside the box. He also said they take a 9/64 allen wrench to take off. Hope this helpsRetired Onkyo 520 (returned broken HK 247)

it's an strde415 my rti8's were hooked up to that blew the tweeter...I also have another newer sony that is 100x6...but I dont believe the newer one puts out the same power as my older strde415 sony. Not sure if one is digital vs. analog amp or what, but the older sony receiver sounds great, not so impressed with the newer one. what do you guys recommend to power my rti8's? Not sure I want to spend on a dedicated amp and separate preamp...but I do have a dinosaur Mitsubishi DA-p10 preamp I could mate with the proper amp if that's a recommendation
