1.2 placement help

I have tried them on the long wall, terrible in my basement. short wall was much better but still, when i walk up and am 1 foot from the speaker in the center I have a ton of bass. anything back from them, nothing it seems to disappear. Right now I have them 9 or 10" from the wall 3 feet in. the room is 23.5 x 26. On the 26 foot wall, it just sounded bad. No bass, tinty, not dynamic at all. This happens to any speaker i put on that wall.

On the 23.3 wall, I have tried from 6 feet apart on down. So far, the better place seems to be 3 feet in from the corner, 8" away from the back of the wall.

Now should they be flat against the back wall? I seem to remember they actually came with a wall brace at the time to attach them to a wall?


So when I walk up on them the bass is strong but as soon as I move back away 2 feet or more, the bass starts to disappear. this happens no matter where I put them unless I corner load them!


Not that It matters, other equipment being used, McIntosh amp, jolida cd, adcom 565 preamp.

BTW the 2.3's didn't seem as picky on the placement.... strange I know....

I have mine placed 6' 6" apart, 5' from the side walls and 8" from the back wall. The sweet spot is 6' to 8' from the center line of the front baffles and I don't have any problems.

By the way do you have them mounted on spikes or the flat feet? You spoke of the bass brace that connects them to the wall, that would also help your bass response if you don't already have them mounted on spikes.

What kind of sound treatments do you suggest?

BTW cement everything. It is a basement.

They are on the spikes.

I have always had a hard time placing speakers down here. in the corner has had the best results but, still not right.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that sounds to me like the classic condition of standing wave cancellation.

Big, square room--I bet it's a nightmare for standing waves.

And if the room is the typical 8' high--3 x 8 = 24 Again; 24 is therefore a multiple of 8, that ceiling height would have resonance problems in a ~24' room.

I bet if you walk around the room, there will be places where the bass is OVERPOWERING; and other places where you can't hear it at all.

You hit it right on the head. If i am at the left wall, the bass on either the amazings, 1.2 or 2.3 is just soooooooo high like unbearable or in the back by the long sde of the 26 foot wall it is just thunder. or...... this one might sound crazy, but If i stand up and take a step in, the bass is good. sit down it disapears. freakin room lol.


Ok so what kind of treatments can I do to help this? or placement suggestions? I have thought about adding a sub but, they should be ok without one.

Covering up as much cement as possible would be a good start. Try to break up the room with dividers, panels, etc. Consulting a professional sound/acoustics company wouldn't hurt either.

Barry Diament over on the Steve Hoffman forum has great ideas about CHEAP room treatments. One that might work for you: Cardboard boxes, with no dimension smaller than 12", stuffed tight with crumpled newspaper, then stacked from floor to ceiling to make a column against the rear wall. A friend tried two of these columns in a basement and was amazed at the way the bass was tamed.

Please go seek the real thread... this is a (perhaps poor) approximation of a good idea.

BTW, I have my SDA 1-c's up on Diament-inspired roller bearings instead of spikes, and am knocked out by the impact on the speaker performance, but that's another topic...

For inexpensive treatments that cover a lot of wall for the money, and have measurable acoustic value you could make your own with these. Get a case, thrown in the open-weave burlap they sell or visit your local fabric store. A little stapling and you're there. Around $20 per 2 X 4 panel and look better than cardboard boxes.

LOL you are more then welcome to come over to hear them!!! I am in Bolingbrook.

After playing around with them for a bit, I think I figured it out.... On the wall where all the bass was no matter where I had the speakers in the room, I put the speakers on that wall instead! Now instead of being a trap, it projects in the room much better. I now have bass inbetween the speakers they way it should be. I am going to get some rugs though and possible some wall treatments to put over the cement.

Well, on a side note, I put the 1.2 next to the 2.3's WOW omfg. I might just keep it like this! granted all 4 running side by side...


I am going to play with it some more. it seems I get a better sound with only the cable running on the 1.2 on the outside, and the 2.3 without a cable running on the inside.

Talk about some air being moved!
