I had posted this in another thread. This is a great TT/Tonearm combo. Offer the fellow $1100 see what happens. -
If I was SURE that I wanted to go vinyl in a serious way,and...if I had the $$$ I'd be thinking about this one: http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1015781#post1015781

That's a nice table too. -

I'm sure he'll take it. He's asking $1050.00!! In all seriousness though that's a great turntable with an excellent cartridge. The one baggedlancer is selling is excellent as well. His includes some extras. You can't go wrong either way.SDA-1C (full mods)

LOL! I was talking about the VPI MK III. This one;

If the guy takes the offer it leaves room to buy a cartridge. -
Thanks for the quick replies! baggedlancer's tt only plays 33...would need an external psu to run 45s. Want a tt that can play 33 and 45 and already has a cartridge.

There is a plethora of TT/tonearm/cart combos in your price range on audiogon. However that Clearaudio TT has gotten some good reviews. I have no experience with them though. Sorry.

You could also try Quest for Sound. Stephen will give you a great deal on a table.

I would prefer the Clearaudio to the VPI...but that's JMO. If I upgrade tables it will be a Clearaudio. The Marantz Reference Series TT-15S1 is a rebadged Clearaudio Emotion.
According to this audiogon listing this one has never been used. If true this might be a very good deal since new MSRP is $1,599.

That VPI is a very solid table with an excellent tonearm. Then again I am biased towards VPIs.

That's what I use (FWIW). It represents a good value with the included MM cartridge. Note that the stylus isn't user-replaceable (even though it is an MM cartridge and not a HOMC).
Bought this one as a demo a year or so ago.

That's a nice looking TT. That record looks pristine.
-
That's an original MoFi half-speed mastered pressing of the Dead's American Beauty. Bought that sucka new ca. 1978 with hard-earned college-era money :-)
It is a superb record/pressing IMNSHO.
The main reason I posted, though, was to indicate that I think that the Marantz/Clearaudio entry level tts are pretty decent values. The VPI Scout is likewise, although significantly more expensive nowadays.
In the sub-$1k/ca. $1k arena, I am more skeptical of the new production Music Halls, Regas, and the "cheaper" (for lack of a better word) Thorens.
YMMV, of course. -

That is one of the MFSL recordings that I don't have. They sound awesome. -
I keep a old Dual CS 5000 with a mono cart on the back shelf for the 45, 33. and 78 speeds it offers. Sometimes the old records strike a fancy.>

Once again many thanks for the abundant info. Put a bid on the Clearaudio.
Wish me luck! -

What does this mean? Don't know all the abreviations. -

FWIW (for what it is worth), MM (moving magnet), HOMC (high output moving coil). -
Thanks for the translation service! :-)
Sorry about that; trying to type fast last night.
cheers, y'all
