Anyone up for Frozen Foods/TV Dinners?

Occassionally I'll eat Hot Pockets, Eggos, Stauffers (sp?) etc when I'm on the go, not in the mood to really get in there and make something. Yesterday I ventured out to the grocery store and while shopping I bought a DiGiorno Harvest Wheat pizza and man I have to admit I'm very surprised at the taste of this thing. Is it your local Pizza Parlor, nope, is it Pizza Hut, Dominoes, Little Ceasars, no but it is pretty darn good stuff. I'd recommend you give it a shot on one of those lazy days you want something fast/easy. So on that note, are there any other good recommendations for frozen foods?

The Bertolli meals are good, but a touch pricey, so catch them on sale.

Digiorno's makes some really good pizza's. I usually pick one up when I go grocery shopping. I actually prefer Digiorno's to Pizza Hut or Domino's personally. They aren't as good as my local pizza places, but they are damn good.

Hot Pockets are great too. I eat them for lunch a lot. I don't mind an occasional TV dinner either. The Hungry Man meals are really good.

I just want my Hungry Man Salisbury Steak of old. You know in the aluminum foil that you had to cook in the oven-those were the days.

I grew up calling it "**** on a shingle." It's not really good. I haven't had that brand but the stuff we grew up on came from Schwan's and it was like eating straight out of a used diaper filled with indian food.

As for frozen foods... I'm the broke guy who has to almost live off them. lol Lean Cuisine is actually pretty damn good for lunch. Add a yogurt and it's plenty of food for me. Love me some frozen pizzas; I mean how do you turn down a Totino's? For a buck and a quarter, it's a good lil pie. DiGiorno's Chicken Supreme...mmmmm. Hell, even Archer Farm's (Target house brand) is a good lil frozen pizza. God I sound pathetic. lol!!

I wouldnt call it pathetic, I love Tortinos too, awesome lil pie as you said. I even add extra shredded cheese to mine. Lol.

I'll have to give the chipped beef a try, looks good amd see if they have the White Castle burgers. What I have seen is half the menu from TGI Fridays now being sold as frozen food. Gotta admit the Fried Macaroni and Cheese is a great appertizer that I've tried actually in the restaurant, not sure about out of the box.

Wow. I wouldn't eat most of that **** with someone else's mouth.

Not the pizza, that's fine in a pinch, but really anything frozen with "meat" in it.... so not appealing.

I eat quite a few of these smart ones at work - not all the flavors are great but there are 5/6 that are actually pretty good. This is one of the better ones.

And at 2/3 for $5 you can't go wrong. Half the people I work with go out for 40 minutes and spend $8 bucks every day.

This is more like $13 bucks a week and it's ready in 4 minutes!!

Not sure if its still there, but there used to be a White Castle in NE Philly at Franklin Mills. Oh and they had/have an Arthur Treachers as well.

I just tried a new one today...It was a frozen pizza, one of the rising crust kinds like Digiorno's. It was a County Market store brand called "Culinary Circle". It was pretty damn good, and was a few bucks cheaper than a Digiorno's. The one I got was "Garlic, Pepperoni and Spinach with 3 cheeses(mozzarella, cheddar and asiago)". I liked it a lot. They were on sale 2 for 11 bucks. Not a bad price.

Well I entered "boycot heinz" in google and found two opposing things. Neither would matter to me.

They had an ad they pulled with 2 guys kissing (a peck on the cheek?)
after some people complained? I never say it. I guess the lefties want it restored and until it is some are boycotting?

The other thing was to boycot Heinz because Teresa married that lefty John Kerry who is seen as and opponent/roadblock to what we are doing in Iraq. So the right wingers are boycotting.

    Pass the ketchup please!!!!!

Was there something besides either of these I should know about?

Chipped Beef isn't frozen, it's dried. It's "chipped" when it's dried. It's usually a cut of meat like a butt or shoulder roast that gets flaky the drier it gets. It's usually smoked or cured before drying.

Creamed chipped beef is mostly a northeast thing. When it's made well, with good chipped beef, it's really not that bad. Is it a scintillating party in your mouth? No, not at all. But it usually starts tasting like crap when the cream starts to burn.

The cream is made out of a roux which, if you know anything about cooking, is real easy to screw up. Once the roux is messed up, it ruins the whole dish. However, if the roux is done right, it is a myriad of sweet and savory flavors. Add a good portion of black pepper and the chipped beef and it comes out pretty good. If you are going to make it, get partially dried chipped beef and don't reconstitute it, let the extra moisture in the roux do the rest of the reconstituting. It won't mess up the roux either cause the beef has enough fat in it to keep the roux balanced enough.

The toast is merely to help you eat it cause it sops up the roux pretty well. Kinda like eggs, sunny side up or over-easy.

Some other options I've seen people do is substitute a portion of the "cream" with Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup or other creamed soup.

Personally, while the Stouffer's stuff is passable, most of the others are garbage and you can't substitute good home made or fresh made stuff with a frozen brick. Most of those companies incorrectly make it with heated up flour, water and butter but that's not the way to do it. It really needs to be done as a roux. Some of them even substitute cornstarch for the flour 'cause it's cheaper and then it REALLY tastes awful!

Al, if you are ever in NJ and got some spare time, gimmie a call and I'll take you to a Jersey diner and get you a porkroll, egg and cheese sammich and some creamed chipped beef done right. Then you can have two Jersey delights! If you come around during dinner time (breakfast is served 24/7 in NJ along with a good cup of coffee) we can get you a cup of snapper soup. That's snapping turtle, not the fish. It's another Jersey delicacy.

You can go find one of the Philly guys to get you scrapple. I don't touch that stuff.
