Apple TV for 2 ch audio

I have converted my CD's to Apple Lossless and have downloaded the files to an Apple TV connected via HDMI to my integrated receiver (Onyko SR606). My question is whether anyone in this forum has tried an external DAC with the Apple TV and if so what improvement can I expect over the DAC inside the Onyko? The apple TV has an optical digital output port so it should interface with an external DAC with no problem. Before I shell out the dollars for a DAC, just curious if anyone in this forum has tried this configuration.
