Yes, its a long post, but please read, if you participate.
This week we are only discussing artists whose last name, and groups whose name begin with the letter E.
Note: The word The doesnt count, so for example The Allman Brothers Band belongs in the "A's" discussion and not in the Ts (guideline #5).
When possible, please supply complete title, format, company, year and catalog number when posting recordings.
And so our 26-week odyssey continues
Hope you come along for the ride

Eagles one of my favorite groups. I have the entire catalog (excluding the "best of").
Hotel California - 1976 - with hits like "Life In The Fast Lane" and "Hotel California" is considered by many to be their best work. I think Desparado - 1973 - gets overlooked but it is one of my favorites. Hell Freezes Over - 1994 - is one of the sonically best produced albums and is often used as a demo. Of course the title comes from the fact that they were going to get back together when "Hell Freezes Over!". Also a quality live concert DVD.
Their first album was The Eagles - 1972 - with "Take It Easy" and "Peaceful Easy Feeling" became an instant hit with their "Country Rock" format. The original group was Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Randy Meisner, Bernie Leadon and Don Felder. Jackson Browne wrote their first big hit "Take It Easy". This group stayed together through the first 4 albums. Leadon left before Hotel California and was replaced by Joe Walsh. Timothy B. Schmidt joined the group for The Long Run - 1979 - and is the lead singer for the song "I Can't Tell You Why". Randy Meisner was gone for this album but Bernie Leadon was back. Jimmy Buffett also sang background on this one. David Sanborn played sax on 4 of their albums.
Like I said, The Eagles rank in my top 5 all-time. I like much of the stuff that did not get airplay as much or more than some of the more popular songs (They don't get played to death on classic rock stations). Something from the Eagles is a must in any rock music collection. If I had to pick just one it would be Hell Freezes Over because it covers both old and new and is sonically great, but you miss a lot of the good early stuff with Bernie Leadon on vocals. Get a couple or get them all...it's good music."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais
"For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don't believe, no proof is possible." - Stuart Chase
"Consistency requires you to be as ignorant today as you were a year ago." - Bernard Berenson -
Gotta go with Emerson Lake and Palmer
To many songs and albums to mention, but one of the greatest pioneering prog rock bands ever.
My favorite song from ELP is From the Beginning. Can play that song over and over again.
Any other ELp fans here? If so what is your favorite song? -
EURYTHMICS - REVENGE
1986 RCA PCDI-5847 CD
The talented singer/songwriter Annie Lennox with the equally talented singer/songwriter/guitar player/producer David Stewart. Lennox's voice is powerful, the lyrics are strong and the cd graps you and holds your attention 'til the end. Recommended.
JAMMING WITH EDWARD!
1972 Pointblank Classic 7243 8 40403 2 1
This is basically The Rolling Stones minus Keith Richards, plus Nicky Hopkins and Ry Cooder. It's a jam session that was cut one night while everyone was waiting for Richards to get out of bed. Blues in nature with a cover of Elmore James, "It Hurts Me Too." I love it.
BTW, Hopkins is "Edward", the linch pin of the series of jams.Political Correctness'.........defined

Yes I am. I've got to go with the one that started it all for me..."Lucky Man" from the first album (Emerson , Lake and Palmer - 1970) which is just barely ahead of "Knife Edge" and "Take A Pebble" from the same album.
I also like the 20+ min title track from their second album Tarkus - 1971.
Brain Salad Surgery - 1973 - had "First Impression" with the lead hook; "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends. We're so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside!" "Come inside the show's about to start, guaranteed to blow your head apart!". Good stuff!"Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

Shack,
Yep, good call on The Eagles/Hell Freezes Over.Political Correctness'.........defined

Eagles yup, love them. Two strong, smile memories for me here:
1.) Saw them open for Yes in the Akron Rubber Bowl in summer of 72 (John McLoughlins Mahavishnu Orchestra played second.) Take It Easy was just starting to get some serious airplay. I sat on the field, stage center about 20 back in the crowd. The audience was largely inattentive, but the group could have cared less. Their pure joy of playing music grabbed me from the start. They just smiled and laughed and played until the audience finally woke up to the fact that this was a group theyd better pay attention to.
2.) I was tooling down the highway the first time I heard Life in the Fast Lane. When I heard the lead guitar go wha-kah-wha, I think I actually said aloud, Since when is Joe Walsh with the Eagles? (Any James Gang/ Joe aficionado knows where I was coming from.) Wherever I was going had to wait until I swung by my favorite record store to pick up a copy of Hotel California. Its another of the 20 or so albums that are on Tours Top Ten list.
EL&P While in college I used to go to a retailer named AudioCraft in east Cleveland. A great place to dream of rigs to come. Anyway, one time I was in the main, high-end room with two roomies, and there was a guy absolutely torturing speakers with the deep bass synth at the end of Lucky Man. First time I ever saw woofers deform. MacIntosh and others were rippling and flexing all over the place. Only one to stand up to the strain was a pair of ARs (9s maybe?). Thought to ourselves, What a demo. Then watched the guy walk out of the store and leave. He was a customer.
My favorite EL&P... From the Beginning, what a sweet song. It and all the essential stuff is on a fine double CD, EL&P The Atlantic Years (1992 7 82403-2). While there is a definite order to much of their work that demands you own the albums, this hits CD preserves much of the order and is a great value.
Aside: Carl Palmer was often referred to as the world's fastest drummer" (something Buddy Rich would have contested I'm sure). Palmer hated that title. He said in an interview I read, "I am not just a drummer. I am a percussionist."
These two groups dominate a rather thin section of "E's", but I've got one or two others I'll review and post later.More later,

I'm a massive Eagles fan also and love all their albums,
especially Desperado and Hotel California. I'll
put in a plug for the Hell Freezes over dvd. I know a lot
of people are not into multi channel music but HFO
is state of the art and stunning on DVD.
I also love ELP and they sound fantastic on SDS's.

Saw the Eagles in Durango, CO at Fort Lewis College. When they came on stage they intoduced the newest member of the band. "He just joined up last night in Aspen. Please welcome Joe Walsh!" We couldn't believe our good fortune.

Emerson, Lake, & Palmer - My favorites are Tarkus, Trilogy, Pictures at an Exhibition, and Brain Salad Surgery

Everything But the Girl
Amplified Heart - CD (1994 Atlantic- 82605-2)
Walking Wounded - CD (1996 Atlantic - 82912-2)
In spite of their name there is a girl. Her name is Tracey Thorn, and while shes no whipped crème beauty, she has the lightest, airiest, most effortless and silky voice you'd ever want to hear. The other half of this two-person group is Ben Watt. They both write and they both compose. On some cuts they collaborate, others are one or the others completely.
Amplified Heart is as seductive as any CD I have ever heard (and yes it's very good for... well you know..., especially in a 5-disc shuffle). About a half dozen session players round out this effort. Track 6, "Missing" was the hit here, but to be honest I wasnt quite sure until it just came on. All these tracks are so good its hard to figure out why they all werent. My favorite is Get Me - and I want to be addictive, I want to be secure, I want to wake up after the night before, but do you get me? Do you ever get me? Very Highly Recommended and would make a great Valentines Day gift for both of you
In contrast to Amplified Hearts acoustic approach, Walking Wounded is virtually 100% electronic. No session players needed. Most of the credits are for programming rather than playing, and almost of them are given to Ben Watt. And the results? No, not as good as Ampd Hart, but still damn good. Its like an 8.5 or 9.0 to Amp Harts perfect 10. BTW this has the beat and bass line Amp Hart lacks, so it too is good for well you know Maybe a two-disc shuffle is all you need.
Theyre retired for now, and have turned their programming skills to this, http://www.ebtg.com/ , but fans like me are still hopeful for more laterMore later,

danger boy, not that its a requirement or anything, but there sure aint nothing wrong with liking EW&F. They were one of the more accessible and versatile funk bands of the 70s. Their Thats the Way of the World is a near, if not a full blown, classic. Their Best of on Columbia records is a fine collection and is still available. (There are a couple other lesser compilation discs out there, so be sure to get the Columbia issue.)
Going to cheat a bit tonite and use some AMG info. All of tonites artists stuff in my collection is on vinyl and my electronics are under construction at the moment.
Joe Ely
Live Shots (1980 Southcoast/ MCA MCA-5262)
Musta Notta Gotta Alotta (1981 Southcoast/ MCA MCA-5183)
Hi-Res (1984 MCA 25 0684-1)
Joes a Texas born rocker from up in the panhandle. It says Lubbock below, but I've read Amarillo, too. Country rock is his "thang". Heres what an AMG review says:Ely partakes of the musical diversity of his hometown, Lubbock, TX, freely mixing country, rock, Tex-Mex, and hard honky-tonk music in excellent songs he writes himself or borrows from his friend Butch Hancock.. William Ruhlmann
Musta Notta Gotta Alotta followed the above release and I liked it a lot as well. The title track is a really fun listen (BTW it continues with sleep last night ).
With Hi-Res, Joe lost me. Not that good. With this release he also lost MCA as his label. For the next six years he floated around and did 3 albums for off-labels, before resigning with MCA in 1990. Hes since released 6 more albums, some of according to AMG are well worth a listen.
AMG also lists a Best of... release in 2000. It might be the best way to sample Joes wares, if youre not familiar with him.
Cmon yall there are some more Es out there including a reasonably bigun Rollover Beethoven ruby red shoes anybody Bueller? anybody (need to credit a Clubber with this last bit, but can't remember where I read it, let alone who posted it.)More later,

Steve Earle. Yes, another country/rock outlaw. I have his 1988 Copperhead Road cd. It is a pretty good work.
This guy has had a life of trouble. Coke, heroin, 6 or more marriages, record company troubles with several labels, and no telling what else. Seems like he loved to party.
Tour.
That AMG guide is handy. Steve Earles story makes for an interesting read.

Well tour, it seems like the E's are slow going. I think I have heard the Steve Earle album Guitar Town before. Now for another of those E artists.
How about Melissa Etheridge. Like her or not, this little laplicker can flat sing. I have one of her cds. I think it is titled "Yes I Am." Not bad music.
joe -
Melissa Ethridge can rock the house. I've seen her in concert twice.. she's awesome. rough, gritty and can belt out a tune like no one else. Yes I am was a great CD. here follow up CD's didn't do as well. she need s hit to bring her back on top.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?
