Wow...This sucks! NHT made some quality speakers. The SB3s are excellent bookshelf speakers along with the Super Zeros and Super Ones. The company will be missed.

That's not the greatest news, but it could be worse. It does appear that there may be light at the end of the tunnel:

Remember, this isn't good-bye, it's just "see you on the other side"

    Thanks for everything!

It gotta stop, who's next? I'm sure polk isn't doing all that great with Tweeter and CC closing, they where 2 huge if not there biggest dealers.

Someone please step up and start spending money, I got my entire system up for sale and I'm buying a totally new one, who's with me?????

I would say it's probably a prudent business decision. Why keep building speakers when the buyers are few and far between. NHT doesn't have a huge retail presence outside of Audio Advisor which doesn't make things easier. I'd bet they'll come back as an Internet-Direct operation.

Magnolia Hi-Fi is closing down many of its stores as well....and I am predicting Boston Acoustics won't be surviving long.

I'm not a huge fan of NHT but they have made some damn nice speakers over the years. I listened to them so many times and have been impressed.

Boston Acoustics makes really nice speakers that can go pound for pound with polk every step of the way.

I get so mad that our industry is falling apart around us. Pioneer made me sick when they decided to pull out of the Tv business. That already is enough to scream. NHT is sad as well as Boston if they start going down. Imagine if polk goes the same way. Not only will we all lose one of our favorite speakers we also lost this site.

Just Imagine all of your favorite Stores closing around you, then all your favorite brands going belly up. Something has to change and the only way I see helping out is to spend some cash. You can't take your money with you when you die. life is to short , I'm not closing down, I wanna revamp my entire system. I will.

Living in the Northeast and having grown up with friends who had the Boston sound. I'd be more than a bit depressed if Boston went down. I have owned some of their products and agree...they're neck and neck with Polk.

no need to imagine started happening years ago............I too am doing all I can to pump $$$$ back in ;) but sadly even with all of FANTASTIC deals out there most just cant afford it...my son expecting his first this spring along with a home and 2 auto payments doesnt have a spare penny and being a mutal fund advisor doesnt help the job security thing.. if this trend continues there be no choices out there......I also have no problem going to the mom/pop place and spend a few $$ more as its the mom/pop owners who so spend their money locally....

Nice to see that they'll keep providing support and warranty work in the 'quiet mode' as I recently bought a 2 channel NHT amp.

My guess is that they will come back with a line of stores to display and demo thier products rather than just online. Like a small boutique shop. Just a SWAG.

Makes sense to me, less incoming revenue, but the same or more operating costs-I don't know how big the company is, but I wish them well.

EDIT--Nevermind--looks like they already deal at B&M locations. Shows you how much I know. :o

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Boston and Snell already nosedive once, and are currently part of D&M holding?

Boston bought Snell in 1995, and D&M aquired Boston in 2005. I'm not sure it was a distress sale but part of D&Ms strategy to bring speakers into the fold.

In the late 90s, I was obsessing about whether to get Boston's CR-8 or NHT's Super One (I got both). Two of my favorite speakers of all-time....my review of each are still on audioreview.com.

Edit: Btw, the new Classic series from Boston is a major "return to form". I checked out the largest bookshelf model and A/B it against some Monitor Audio bookshelf....the Boston wins hands down.

It just hit me the other day how bad the economy is. I'm in a government job and I am somewhat isolated from all the layoffs and such....despite a 5% pay decrease. Still, as I sat in my car waiting for a red light at an intersection, I noticed everything on four sides of the intersection is gone....the Chevy car dealership, the Washington Mutual branch, the Mervyn's (bankrupted discount clothing chain), the Circuit City, the golf store, etc. Yikes!!

This week also saw the news of D&M consolidating Snell into McIntosh's speaker manufacturing facilities.

Just curious where Polk is still sold. Living is S. Florida, The lower/mid Polk's wer sold at CC (though not very well) and the LSI's wer sold at Sound Advice (Tweeter). They are both now defunct. I have never seen a Polk product in the Magnolia Best Buys here, just Definitive, Martin Logan, Boston and a few others.

The Magnolia stores I've visited have never had any Polk products. Since BB bought them only BB has been carrying some of the new TSI, OWM, Atrium, HT/Sub, and PSW series as Shack points out with his link above.

And Magnolia stores are in trouble!

I have never been a huge fan of NHT’s floorstanding speakers, but I can guarantee that their bookshelf speakers are equal, or better than any other speaker manufacturer on the market period within the same price range.
When I see corporations with products this strong failing, just like Hales Audio, it literally makes me question the intelligence of the buying market. The philosophy of buyers now must be strictly mp3 players, and computer audio. It is very hard for me to in-vision a corporation like this to fail.

My Hales are great. But, the public buys "apparent value".
If it isn't well known and costs above avereage, it's an uphill
battle. If it's cheap and unknown, a lot more people take a chance.
The crossover on Hales uses all premium parts. The cabinet is
double walled wood, about as rigid as any I've seen. They went
under because 99% of everyone started buying HT systems.
Guys like Polk and Infinity started making cheaper, smaller
speakers in bulk, since now everyone needed 5+sub.
The 2 channel stuff is a small part of the market. And the small
cheaper mass market stuff for HT is where the money is at.
Like it or not, welcome to the real world. The new wave of direct
marketed speakers from China is upon us. And the fallout is going
    to be ugly.

That's been happening for over 10 years....

Back in the years when I had my NHT Super Ones and Boston CR-8s, I also own a pair of HTD (Home Theater Direct) Level 3 bookshelf speakers. HTD was one of the earliest direct marketing speaker companies, despite being a subsidiary of the pre-Carver AudioSource. The speakers were made in China and were amazing value and in workmanship. Didn't sound bad either. HTD is still around and look how many "traditional" speaker brands have disappeared....

    Sigh
