My wavelength Brick should arrive tomorrow. For now just have my i-pod hooked up to pre-amp.

Hmmmm....how do I be careful with my LSis? Can they be damaged with this set-up?

I'm glad you're enjoying it. I love the Dynaco ST-70 amps. They're without a doubt one of the most underrated amps. Their sound quality is fantastic with the right tubes in them. The XF2 Mullards can't be beat in them. The PAS match is a good one.

Nice setup! I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a Pas 3...I have a Pat 3 here and was thinking about gutting it and putting different guts inside. The stock unit leaves a lot to be desired.

You should be ok driving those LSi's as long as you use the 4 ohm taps.

I was wondering the same. I am also trying a ST-70 that I just bought, had cleaned up and re-capped. It is driving my CRS+ speakers using a vintage Marantz 7T preamp. It has two of the original Telefunkens and two "generic" tubes and so far I have been VERY impressed at the sound. I like it more than my monster NAD amp. However, I wasn't clear if I should run through the 8 or 4 ohms taps (am using the 8 ohms at the moment). Should I switch to the 4 ohms??

don't know if CRS are 4 or 8 ohm.
My Pas 3 is all original except the power supply....was upgraded. Bought it on audiogon.

Brian is a nice guy to deal with and nice to chat with.
The pas 3 is the first preamp that I have ever had and I gotta say I'm hooked. I don't think that it is a purist preamp since it has lots of sound modifying buttons/knobs (loudness switch, Bass and tone controls) but I like contouring the music to my taste. The Bass is amazing!! This little amp/preamp and my Lsis shake the house. The only problem is that the bass is not as tight as I would like it...of course it could just be my cheap ipod recordings...cant wait to get my Brick to see.
I have a lot to learn about the circuits and tubes and hopefully not too long before I'm rolling tubes.

Awesome stuff. I also have an ST-70 and I will never sell that amp. It's so good.
The reason you'd want to use the 4-ohm taps is because it will provide better damping for your LSi. I started with the LSi9 and ST-70 combo. However, you may lose some high frequencies by going to the 4 ohm taps.
I'm sure you have a pair of RTi speakers. If you do, try connecting them to the ST-70. That combination is highly intoxicating. The RT series are much easier to drive and more tube friendly than the LSi.
    Enjoy your amp.

Still wondering as per my post above. Should I also run my CRS+ speaks through the 4ohms taps of my ST-70??

    Thanks.

Are those 6 ohm speakers? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I think you should connect to the 4 ohm tap. I seem to recall that it is easier for your amp to drive a higher impedance speaker than a lower one.

Do all the rolling you like but leave the tubes in the ST-70 alone. You're not going to get a better sounding set of tubes than what's in there now.

The Brick came today! I finally have my USB DAC. Haven't had time to really compare but so far it sounds REALLY nice. Incredibly easy to install.

Are those Mullard XF-2's in your Dynaco? If they are, you may want to get a quad of new production and save the life of your Mullards. Use them when you want to do some serious listening. Check ebay. You won't believe how much XF-2's go for.

Many people have said that the new Gold Lion KT77 (direct EL34 replacement) is better sounding than the XF-2, but the XF-2 will always hold their value.

What brand of rectifier and input tubes are you using? Sylvania 7199 are my favorite. Mullard GZ34 are probably the best.

The XF2 in that dynaco are close to 50 years old and still testing at new levels. Keep the bias just a hair under recommended and they'll last forever. As far as the new Gold Lions are concerned, they're not a bad re-issue but nothing close to the originals and are probably in reality being compared to EH, JJ, or some of the newer re-issues. I've got matching quads in a couple of my amps. They sound ok, but the XF2 is a heck of a lot better sounding tube.
The recitifer is a JJ new. The sound isn't any different than the Mullard but won't take the abuse the Mullard will. Always follow the 5 minute rule and rectifier tubes hold up well.

I noticed in the pic of the brick you're running some "average" cables. You can vastly improve sound quality by running a better cable. Yours are very limiting.
    Not criticizing but suggesting.

aahhhh....at first it would look like average cable. The cable running from my brick to the preamp is an MIT AVt 1. The cable from my preamp to amp is an average cable. Bidding on a shotgun S3. Will replace it as soon as possible.
Here is a question...all of the RCA posts on my preamp look like tin...would replacing these (the ones that I use) be a worthwhile upgrade?

I wouldn't mix AVt and Shotgun cables. I had lackluster results mixing the two.

Replacing the RCA's isn't a bad idea, you could use some deoxit on them instead.

Interesting. In my system, the JJ KT77 was many levels ahead of other current production. But I also love the Mullard re-issue, sounds very much like the SED with better bass and treble extension. But then again, I also love the EH EL34. Can be a little bright, but the overall tone is quite nice.
Don't forget that you can also run 6L6 and KT66 in the ST-70. Mine sounded very good with Sovtek KT66. The 6L6 I tried is very mellow and dark. YOu'll lose output power but once in a while, it's nice to change the tone a little.
