I did my own roof a couple of years ago. The roofing company estimated $4200 for the job using cheap 20 year 3 tab shingles, + any decking that needed replacement. My little brother is a roofer, cost of doing it ourselves was less than $1800, using the best architectural 40 year shingles, and replacing over a third of the decking. None of it had water damage, but in the 70's when the house was built they used plywood, it warps over time and just looks bad (wavy roof). Also added ridge vents, and replaced all the vent boots and furnace vent flashing, things that the contractor had not put on his bid.

Took us two days for a complete tearoff and re-shingle. Saved a ton of money, and ended up with a much better quality roof than the contractor would have done, but it did give me much more respect for roofers, there is no way I could do that every day for a living.

The shingles are 30 year architectural GAF/ELF, but I don't think roofers or anyone making a killing on any work as they all seem hungry for the business. The material price was a bit high when I estimated the price given the size so overall it's was a fair price IMHO. Happy camper. :)

Anything over 30 year shingles in Florida isn't worth it, as it needs to be replaced every 15 years or so any way.
