and need some advice on products to use. We received my wife's bedroom furniture from her parents to use for our soon to be born son's room(May 2nd) and it is painted a pale yellow. The furniture is a combination of solid wood and wood veneer. Do ya'll have any tips on the types of strippers, handy tools to get things out of crevices, etc? The plan is to stain the wood after we are done so the better the strip job better the stain will look. I do plan on sanding it down some as there is some minor damage that could easily be fixed with a little sanding.

Thank you ladies and gents.
I know just enough to be dangerous, but don't tell my wife, she thinks I'm a genius. :D

It's a comfort to know that YOU are not the one doing the stripping. I pictured a pole in your bedroom.:D:eek:

I was thinking edbert may be posting something along the lines of "Due to the tough economic times, I'm going to start stripping at the local strip joint...."

I am glad this is on a wholly different subject.

This is partially correct. We asked her parents if we could have her old furniture so that we didn't have to spend the cash on new stuff, and they were glad to get it out of their house. Apparently they have been wanting to get new furniture for her old room, but didn't have the heart to get rid of her old furniture. Sometimes it pays to just ask.

Wow. Now that I look at it, my grammar probably could have been a little better there, but I guess it fits overall. I definitely don't want to buy a mattress, headboard, etc. that has been "used" by anyone in either of our families.

Got great results from a product called PEEL AWAY. (sorry dont have a link). We stripped all the interior finish work of a colonial home during its restoration. Great product, worked wonders, took basically everything down to bare wood, very minimal scraping.

WARNING TO YOU! Please use nice thick rubber gloves if you go with this process, not the light weight vinyl or latex. The corrosive will eat right through them. Warnings are in place on product, but arent as specific as they should be. Had a co-worker suffer small burns after prolonged use with the vinyl/latex gloves.

I've found the most epa unfriendly stuff usually works the best. If you want to go green, eat veggies after you're done.

I've had good luck with Jasco stripper in the past.
My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.

Whoa! hold up. Don't knock the pole in the bedroom.

Good luck stripping that bed set. It is not an easy task. I use ZIP brand gel stripper and it works great but it might not work good on veneer. It may lift it from the surface.

Ah, aircraft stripper followed by a liberal application of liquid lye. The bubbling, sizzling sounds and smoke will definitely get your attention.

Guaranteed to remove 30 coats of paint, burn a hole thru your skin in seconds flat and kill any and all vegetation.

Warning: DO NOT try this, for professional use only in controlled conditions.

    Seriously, DO NOT try this.

I have not tried this myself but a friend of mine said he used non-environmentally safe stripper and then set the furniture out in the middle of a field after letting the stripper work into the paint and then he pressure washed the paint off. He said that it worked really good, especially in the tiny groves of hand carved furniture. The only thing he said is to watch out for gouging the wood due to too much pressure and that you needed to make sure you used the right tip. He also recommended that you not try this on a soft wood and safety goggles/protective gear is a must.

Food for thought if you have lots of stripping to do. It may not be the ideal way to do it but I must admit, his furniture looks great. He also said that it was rather quick from start to finish using this technique. I would refer you to F1nut's advice on any woodworking though, even if he disapproves of this method because I have seen his work and it is absolutely top notch.

Would that work with out removing the veneer?

So while stripping I shouldn't wear latex because it won't hold up during long stripping sessions and only geniune rubber. Got it. :D

Tom, while that will work for some applications, it's not something I would recommend especially on finer furniture. Water has no place on furniture as it will absolutely raise the grain, can cause warping and depending on the original glue, will dissolve it.

Don't worry, I'm not going to be hosing this furniture down at all. I will try to find a good chemical stripper (not water based so I don't mess up the veneer), lacquer thinner, rubber gloves and plenty of time. I don't see any reason to rush through this process, and I don't want to have to do any more work than is really necessary. Thank you again for all the tips, I'll be sure and post some pics along the way once I finally get enough space in the garage and all the materials to get started on this.

I've done a pretty fair amount of refinishing in my time. Good gloves are an absolute must!!
    1. Whatever stripper you use, make sure it's in a well ventilated area. I used my garage and had the pieces next to big open door.

    2. Apply the stripping chemical liberally and let it sit, don't be impatient and clean it off too soon. Having to reapply to get a small section of paint off can damage the surrounding natural wood.

    3. When removing the goo, I dumped the stuff into an empty paint can, as the stuff is very dangerous to animals.

    4. Clean the wood several times with damp, not waterlogged rags. Use a dry rag right behind the damp one. Let the wood dry out for a few days.

    5. Stain an unseen area first to see how the color choice will turn out. never stain and apply a clear coat on a windy day.
