Searched CP for about 1 hour last night, and still could not figure out an answer to this question:

Why is the pin/blade more desireable than the blade/blade?

My Studio's have pin/blade and Standards have blade/blade.
No big deal, just wanted some input on the matter.
Thanks to all.

My SDA knowledge is a bit rusty, but one difference has to do with the Polk non common ground amp interface. The pin/blade is a go for the non common ground interface, while only some blade/blade were (the blade/blade would require adapters). If you are using common ground amps, you don’t have to worry about using the interface.

EDIT: Linkage to sold interface with picture of compatibility chart.

Are the crossovers different? Can you perform the TL upgrade on a blade/blade?

It depends upon the speaker in question. My SDA-2B's apparently are one of the exceptions wherein a Blade/Blade speaker can be both TL'd AND made to work with the AI-1 for use with non-common ground amps.

As a general rule I think Blade/Blade were not to designed to be used with the AI-1.

You might want to download the "SDA Parts and Drivers List" pdf from http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55888 (Post #8)

I think most of the crossovers listed that start with "BE" are the newer crossovers that were Pin/Blade, and you can see which crossover models were used in the TL models.

Posts #2, 3, 4 & 5 let you download all of the various SDA Schematics where the Pin/Blade or Blade/Blade connection is usually specified.

To my knowledge you can't perform a "TL" upgrade on anything other than the 2B's and CRS+'s, without re-engineering...............that is if you want to do it properly

Yep, saw it..........my response still stands, you can't "TL" something without some re-engineering.

Plus the TL's had much, much better cabinets. The discussion is great and I always encourage outside the box thinking. But after 15 years or so don;t you think this has been discussed before...............and still no hard answer or procedure for getting it done, hummmmmmmm.........this isn't remotely a "new" question, but carry on as the info Big Mac posted has never been seen before on this board.

Wonder how Polk feels about proprietary info being posted publically. Fascinating post though as those are the values omitted from the SDA compendium and pretty much not published anywhere.

No argument here and no judgments passed.

guy's maybe I'm distracted,, but isn't there an upgrade done on the/some 2b's & crs +? that involves adding a cap in the x-over,allowing the use of the rdo-198?
JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

Yes, but it only "works" in those 2 models. I am not aware of any other SDA models where this is possible. But we're getting some good info in the 2 threads so far.

After reading many posts I think that is the TL upgrade. Seems to me that is the way to go.

I was wondering If I could do that to both of my sets, or is it limited to the pin/blade.

Keep in mind I am a total noobie to upgrading XO's, so I could be totally wrong.

I'm sorry to keep cross-posting, but I believe we have a breakthrough at http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1012031

I'm trying to confirm, but if true, the SDA-1B and SDA SRS 2 will join the list of TL update candidates. Keep your fingers crossed.

My question was answered by F1Nut in an old post. The TL upgrade can be performed on the blade/blade as well.

No way I can afford to do both of my SDA's. Think I'll do my studio version since they are in near perfect shape.;)

Confirming, both schematics for the SDA-2B at http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55888 (Post #3) show identical drivers, capacitors, resistors and inductors and are "TL" compatible (upgrade original SL2000/RDO194-1 with SL3000/RDO198-1 and add 5.8 uf cap + 2.7 ohm resistor in parallel to tweeter circuit). The only difference in the pin/blade versus blade/blade socket is additional grounding (not present on the blade/blade model) has been added.
