I am glad I am helping you. When I bought my first DVD player in May 1999 it came with a coupon for 10 free DVD rentals from Netflix. I was hooked, and have been a member now for almost 10 years. Other than recording BSG on a DVR to skip commercials, I never watch TV, only DVDs.

I was helping but am done. No more Netflix, I'm going BlockBuster. I'm very tired of the "short wait", "long wait" and "very long wait" with new releases on Blu. At least with BB I can walk into my local shop and pick the title off the shelf on street day, or they'll hold it for me until I get there.

I do not have that problem. By the time new releases get to the top of my queue they have been out for over a year. If I want to see something so bad that I cannot wait a few weeks for the masses to be satiated then it is worth buying.

Got an xbox 360? Or give the Roku box a try. Netflix started streaming HD- my dad uses the Roku box with no issues at all, zero wait, no extra charge (apart from buying the $99 box and your usual netflix subsciption).

That's great, except for the fact that newer movies are never available to watch instantly.

Don't get me wrong, I love Netflix, but there's not been a single new release that i've seen on the watch instantly list.

The new release list does need a little help, and the TV half is definitely better than the movie half. But I would assume most of it has to do with licensing and they are working as hard as they can to get as many movies up as possible. (The more movies people stream, the lest Netflix has to ship, the more money they make.)

very true about the waiting periods on newer releases, i've been waiting for Pineapple Express since its release over 2 months back and it still shows "Long Wait", gets frustrating at times but IMO i feel netflix or any other similiar service is worth the price, i usually view about 10-12 movies monthly in my house, and yes having the newest movies when released is great but there are a bunch of older movies out there to keep me occupied, just sucks most are not on blu ray yet, although i have grown to appreciate my Toshiba's upconverting capabilities

I didn't go through the instant list very thoroughly when I was setting it up, so you could very well have a point there. However, I'm pretty certain zingo is right: They're gonna be working their asses off to convince people to stream 'cause it's a much cheaper business model.

Streaming has its benefits, but at this time the video quality is not there. I guess it is like MP3 music, some people could care less about the quality and only want the content, while others want the content but in the highest quality.

Netflix is "usually" good about sending me new releases. Like today for instance, they shipped out 3 new releases that come out tomorrow, and i'll receive them tomorrow. But, god forbid they don't ship me out a new release on monday, it goes into short or long wait and i don't see it forever. I don't rent old movies from netflix though, i've been a movie guy since i was a kid so i've seen what feels like everything.

I just always try to make sure i have available slots in my queue at least a few days before new movies come out, then i usually get them. Netflix does like to throttle people though, which sucks. When i feel i'm being throttled, i just take advantage in my own way. Lets say the next time i have a full queue, well i'll report the movies missing, or report that they didn't show up, hence opening all the slots in my queue and increasing the chance of them sending me more movies. This works for me a lot (sometimes you gotta work the system), i've been doing it for over a year and i usually get all the movies i want with the exception of the occasional movie here or there (then i just go to blockbuster so i don't have to wait ten years).

    Anyways, i have a love/hate relationship with netfilx...:D

Have you checked out their streaming to Roku or Xbox? It's as good or better than TWC here. The HD stream needed about a minute to spool up, but it was definitely better than DVD quality. SD stream vs DVD, I might have noticed the compression once or twice, but again, it was better than TWC. I see this as a viable option thats only going to get better as bandwidth increases and it's a cheap option for better-than-DVD quality if they have what you want in HD.

'course I'm assuming that you've got decent internet- take that out of the equation and I'm sure it'll look awful.

From a business standpoint, their CEO is savvy, and they are definitely playing to their base. The quote is almost enough to make me switch back.

    Pasted from SeekingAlpha:
The jury’s still out on whether there’s a modest CEO in the land. But there’s at least one very clever CEO: Reed Hastings of Netflix (NFLX).
In a New York Times op-ed, Hastings argues that President Obama’s proposal to limit certain CEO pay is “a terrible idea.” Most CEOs probably agree. But instead of the usual bromides about how CEOs are geniuses who deserve every penny they earn, Hastings proposes an alternative: Tax anybody who earns over $1 million – which includes most Fortune 500 CEOs – at 50 percent. Including him.

You can already hear them moaning at the country club. Here’s how Hastings answers the well-endowed doubters:

"Some will tell you that would reduce the incentive to earn but I don’t see that as likely. Besides, half of a giant compensation package is still pretty huge, and most of our motivation is the sheer challenge of the job anyway."

Sorry for the misunderstanding guys, i know the queue is infinite. When i said my queue, i meant my available slots. I'm on the 4 at a time plan, so when my 4 available slots are full (meaning i have the movies at home) is when i'll sometimes do what i had said above. Netflix likes to take advantage of heavy renters by throttling them, so i take advantage of them right back, and it works.

How much speed is good enough for decent streaming, I just got a TiVo and am thinking about doing the Netflix thing? I've got the 3 mb AT&T DSL internet. Is that good for streaming?

Okay. That makes sense. Actually, Netflix was sued for throttling and lost, so they stopped it. Of course they never admitted that they did it in the first place.

Anyway, the overwhelming majority of the time I get an email the next day saying they have received my returned movie, and later that day I get another email saying the next movie has been shipped. Generally, I rarely go through more than 2, sometimes 3, movies a week on the 3 movie plan. I tend to watch a movie for about 30-45 minutes, unless it is really great, and finish it the next night.

I don't know if you do this or not, but you're best chance at getting a new release on the day it comes out is to have it in your queue before the movie actually comes out. I don't have a back log of older movies either, i actually tend to only rent new releases from netflix. I have movies in my queue now that aren't even coming out for a couple of months. And i'm receiving 3 tomorrow that are releasing tomorrow, Body of Lies, Changeling, and Quarantine.

This works for me most of the time, but i aslo have a netflix shipping center right in my city, and a couple others in the states surrounding me.

Whenever a movie comes out that i forgot to add in my queue before it was released, it will go into either short, long, or very long wait. Except for last week, Miracle at St Anna came out and i didn't even realize it, so i put it in my queue on friday and got it the following day, i was pretty surprised actually. The movie wasn't that great though, so i'm glad i got it through netflix and didn't resort to blockbuster, which i do once in a blue moon if something doesn't get shipped to me.

This is a website i use for finding out when new blurays are coming out.

Oh, I have done this and I have a shipping center not 10 miles away. But alas, no luck. I had several in my queue months before they street and it goes straight to "very long wait".

Well if this happens to you more often than not, it must be very irritating. That only happens to me about 10% of the time, but i still get pretty disgruntled with netflix when i see "very long wait".

I've had the movie Mirrors in my queue since it came out, and still haven't received it. Even though they ship me movies 90% of the time, that 10% that they don't is enough to annoy me and make me think about switching to Blockbuster Total Access. Especially when i'm paying $25 a month for a service.

They really need to purchase more copies of new release blu rays and try to get rid of the "very long waits", it's probably not likely though with the amount of people using the service.

My queue hasn't gone past 50, nevermind 500, at 500 it might as well be infinite to me lol
But that's because i have no desire to rent older movies, i've been an avid movie watcher since i was a child and i've seen lots of movies. I reserve my netflix queue for new releases, even before netflix i'd alway be at the video store on tuesdays to get the new releases i was interested in seeing. It's the longest current running hobby i've ever had, considering i started as a child. Well that and video games, oh and fishing as well (actually, i have a lot long current running hobbies)! :p
