OWM3 as rear speakers

I am in the process of searching for direct radiating speakers to serve as my rear/surround speakers. I was looking at the OWM3, mostly because I wanted a rear speaker less conspicuous and versatile. Would this be a good option if combined with the RT1000p and CS400? Anyone, feel free to pitch in your opinion. Thanks! :D

OK, maybe I am being too specific. For anyone who owns/knows these speakers, what can you tell me about them?

Hey eagle, I own the OWM3's as my rears and I was in the same situation with wanting them out of the way but I also didn't want in-wall speakers. I totally love mine, took about 3 weeks or so to break them in but I think they more than hold their own as my rear surrounds. With rears it's not as important to have them match up timbre wise like your front and center. Unless you have a very good ear you shouldn't have a problem with them as your rears IMHO. Just as a heads up, polk is coming out with OWM5's here shortly they look nearly the same (except for the second woofer added). I will most likely wind up getting those also. And as for versatility and hook-up options the OWM's are excellent, I have mine up in the corners and they look and sound sweet. The white ones are also able to be painted which adds even more to their ease of blending in. All in all I really like mine and I can't wait to add the OWM5's to my polk collection

Hi dborzz, thanks for your recommendation. I am glad to hear from someone who has had good experience with them. I am leaning more and more toward them, because of their versatility and good sound. They are rear speakers after all. Did you install yours on the corner with the bracket provided, or are you using an articulating bracket mount? The latter may provide more freedom. I am also trying to find the best way to hide the speaker wires. I was looking at those flat ones that are applied with an adhesive and can be painted on, but I am not sure about the quality. What did you use, if you don't mind me asking?

Mine are mounted to the wall(the sideways corner mount) with no articulating bracket.....although that sounds like a great idea, but I liked the way they sounded when I popped them up there so I stuck with it. And luckily when I bought my house one of the few things the former owners did right was run speaker wire through a small hole in the wall down through the basement and to a hole in the floor where my setup is. Granted I would of eventually taken care of that myself but I was glad it was already done. I would say if you're in a house run em through the wall, if in an apt then I think you're on the right track with the flat and painted. The worst thing about this damn hobby is all the wires....lol. There is plenty of high quality flat speaker wire around, this is certainly not my area of expertise, the rest of the smart fellas on here will be glad to help you come up with some wiring solutions if you ask them!!!

As rear speakers, would the RM7s be a better option to the OWM3?

My wife has nixed the FXiAs as too large. FXi3s have a dubious chance. CSiA4 is in, but I am working on the A6 still being accepted (it's only "deeper"). OWM3s are accepted, but OWM5s are on the "we'll see" list. We're redoing our living room now anyway. Right now that means a new sofa, new entertainment stack (TV is next year), and either we keep our two small comfy chairs, or get one new bigger one.

Out in left field, is any "real" surround bar at a good price. ($1K is too rich; Polk SB42 is not "surround" enough for me, although there are deals on both new and used out there just now).

How about you? Have you crossed any of these bridges yet? RT1000p are like the...? RTiA7s? See my system at http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showcase/view.php?userid=93040

If this helps, I was in the same situation. We are redoing the living room and any other speaker would have been too large to mount (allegedly). So I finally opted for the OWM3. I bought a pair of black ones from newegg.com for $130 ($199.95 MSRP) and free shipping. That's the lowest I have been able to find.

I bought the owm3s the other day for my surrounds and am very pleased with them. The clarity is excellent. Thanks again Eagle94 for the tip at Newegg.

I've also used the word "allegedly" here, but am happy in doing so. (Also same not so un-recently for the words "I do", congrats!) Thanks for the newegg pointer; beat my OWM3 best price by $10. Decisions, decisions.

Hey guys, happy to share knowledge on deals with other Polk Heads. I tested the OWM3 too, and I was pretty happy with them too, especially at that price. Now if I could only find a good deal on a new Denon 2809CI. My next mission will be to get the rear speaker wires to "magically" disappear so as not to offend my soon-to-be wife's visual senses.

That Denon is no cheap date. The best I can see it for is at buy.com for $849. I guess money can buy happiness after all!

No kidding about being no cheap date. But I have had the last receiver for 15 years, so hopefully this one will last me just as long. I have tried Buy.com, but I saw it for $1,198. Were you referring to other merchants listed? I have thought about that, but I am afraid that buying it in the gray market may void the manufacturer's warranty. I am trying to figure out what online retailers are actually authorized dealers. Denon's website seems to list only brick and mortar retailers.

On buy.com, if you input the Denon into the search box, it comes up at the higher price. But if you look as a search (electronics, receivers, etc.) it comes up at $849. Sold through 6ave electronics, which is an authorized dealer according to Denon's website. Good luck.

    Give this a try:
Denon on line dealers Good luck. It seems until something is becoming obsolete, most of the time prices will be MSRP.
