I have a good friend who wants to get into doing voice over work, books on tape ect. Was wondering if anyone would have some good suggestions on mic's for his venture?

It really depends how much they want to spend. If you're looking for economical, the Shure SM57 is a versatile workhorse and the 58 is more specifically for vocals. Both can be had for less than $100. As you move up, there's mics like the AKG 414 which has a few different flavors and ranges anywhere from $600-1500. this mic sounds great but requires phantom power. Neumann is another fine company. It's the same dilemma we face here.. how much do I want to spend vs. performance. You're just on the other side of the speakers.

But as I said, it really depends on how serious your friend is and how big their pockets are.

A large diaphragm condenser mic will give you what you want.
Like Tim mentioned, price is however much you are willing to spend.

I have 2 of these, they are cheap, reasonably well built, and sound very decent.

For male voices, EV RE20. It was the industry standard for decades, and is bulletproof. I dropped one 6 feet on it's head, it didn't miss a beat. I wouldn't try that with the AKG.
