My son's middle school had a Jazz concert . . . 6th, 7th, and 8th graders and they were awesome.
4 Alto Saxes
1 Tenor Sax
1 Barritone Sax
2 Bones
1 Bass Bone
2 Flutes
2 Clarinets
6 Trumpets
1 set of Horse Teeth
2 Bass Guitars
1 Drum Kit
2 Tamborines
They played two big band swing tunes, Bully Bullly, & Twist + Shout.
Live music is great no matter what the age group.
Kinda sounded like my 1.2 TLs.:D

Glad you had a good time. Does your son play?
One of the biggest things I miss from High School was playing in a Jazz band and a Blues Band (Tenor Sax 1 baby!!!). Live is always great, and usually better than recorded (imo), however, I was lucky enough to be given to opportunity to realize how playing live is even better than listening to live.
(edit for spelling) I am ashamed. -
My son plays the alto sax. He just turned 12. You should hear how good this little guy is. When we first got him the sax he picked it up and started playing songs the school gave him right away.
-
Right on! I'm obviously biased in favor of musicians who play the Sax. Hopefully he sticks with it and doesn't get into that EMO shat! lol The fact that he is catching on so quickly is going to make it that much more enjoyable for him throughout his entire Sax career.
One thing that helped me with improving solo's and getting the general "feel" (which is what jazz is all about) was just playing along by ear to... well, anything!
Just think of the heightened appreciation he is going to have for music once he gets older after coming from a jazz/blues background. Especially after becoming used to the 'live' sound. He's going to be begging you for his own SDA's before he's driving. lol.
My experiences playing with a live jazz/blues/concert band, I can say without a doubt, are the primary reasons for my development in the appreciation for, and and understanding of, all genres of music.
Oh one thing you could check out if he likes experimenting with his sound:
My buddy played Alto at the same time I was playing, but he played with a Tenor mouthpiece and built up the cork on the neck to seal it good. It gave a very gritty sound like a mean tenor, but at the Alto pitch. -

Thanks, I'll turn him on to the idea.:) -

That's great to hear Joe. That's talent that need to be cherished.I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

The best thing is that the boy doesn't need to be told to practice.

Oh BTW give him a tenor reed first if he likes the sound then do the mpc thing. That's actually what I hear John Coltrane did when he was a little boy.2-channelBelles 22A Pre, Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 2, Marantz SA8005, Pro-Ject RPM-10 Turntable, Pro-Ject Phono Box DS3B, Polk Audio Legend L800's, AudioQuest Cable throughout. -

Good work, Joe, it looks like you and he are doing a fine job.
One thing, though: in the list of instruments in the ensemble, I failed to see any mention of ....... cowbell.Sal Palooza -

Hahahhaha there may have been one on the drum kit. -
This is very cool. My daughter just started taking trumpet in middle school. I played from 5th grade through high school. I just picked up a cheap used student horn so we can play together (the daughter is using my old horn). I downloaded some duet music off of the internets that we are going to work on together. This is so fun!
I also bought a compilation of BS&T tunes (sheet music) that I am going to play along with the recordings."Don't forget to change your politician. They are like diapers they need to be changed regularly, and for the same reason." -
That is so cool playing together.
My son had me print full pages of blank music bars so he can start writing his own music.
