Newby looking for some guidance

I am putting together a family oriented 7.1 system and would like some guidance. So far I have Monitor 70s in the front, Monitor 50s for the sides, CS2 center and 404 sub. Now I need to look toward the rear and receiver. Right now I am thinking either Monitor 40 or moving the 50 back and getting some 60s in their place. The receiver I am looking at is the Onkyo 806. The system will be used in a family room for movies, tv and wii. Am I on the right path or is their another direction I should consider

What are the room dimensions? This will effect the power requirements from your receiver, and the size requirements for your rear speakers.Ludicrous gibs!

Greetings and welcome to the Club Polk Forums! There is a lot of good material on this website. Check out the following link, start at page 29. Look Here
You'll find a lot of info by Googling "HT Room Setup", lot's of info about large size room, etc. Simplest rule of thumb is that you want to have a rectangular orientation, long walls in front, at least 3 to 4 feet from the side wall on the short side. Front speakers should be an equilateral triangle from your front listening position. Front speakers should have tweeters at ear level, surround speakers should be dipoles about six feet from the floor. I like front and rear subs, one rear center, get an SPL meter to balance it all.
Do your research and ask some questions. Don't cheat yourself on power. The more power the better. Notice that I didn't say louder. More watts will get you better detail and improved sound stage. Room treatments are also a plus, some simple placement of sound absorbing material, or geometric interferences that break up reflections, large plants, curtains or drapes, even a coat rack with coats can do some good to knock down the reflections that can overload a room and muddle the image.
Good luck!Carl -
Thanks Carl, I will check it out.

Thank you for your help, I went with the Onkyo 806 and it has made a big diff. over my old 520. As for rear sound I am stiking with the 5.1 system for now and bi amping the m70's. Onkyo's auto calibration set up worked out nice.
