Hey guys! I'm trying to "fix" my current home audio set up situation. First, lemme give you a general breakdown of my set up and what I want to accomplish:o I'm currently running two receivers, one for HT and one for 2ch music. I have a mid 90s Technics that I'm using to power two 11t towers that I just finished upgrading not to long ago. I'm using a Sony 6.1 receiver for the HT. It doesn't have full bandwith power. I would like to get ONE receiver with full bandwith power to run it all. I know I have a LONG way to go before I'm able to get the really good stuff, so bear with me here:o I would be happy with a 6.1 or 7.1 receiver(just have to set it for one rear instead of two). I already have all the speakers permantly mounted in a 6.1 configuration and I rent, so I'm not going to change that. The Technics has plenty of power, but I'm sure it's not the best in the sound quality area. So basically I need enough power to give the 11ts what they can take. If it can do that, then I know it will power the HT speakers just fine, especially with the xover taking the bass out of those. I let a sweet Denon get away from me the other day on craigs list for $250, cause I was sick and could get it:( I've looked on the web and have been combing craigslist, and now I just frankly overwhelmed. Someone please help me out with a moment of clarity:D

Harmon store on ebay? I'll have to see if I can find that one! I didn't know such an animal existed:D I had a guy offer me a HK avr 635 for $350, but it doesn't have A/B fronts:( Also are the HK receivers rated to handle 6ohm or even 4 ohms? All I've seen says 8ohm on them, but I could have missed something:confused:

I've never seen specs on a Harman that say they can run 4 ohms continuous.

The Onkyos 80X and above can be set to 4 ohms but protection circuitry kicks in if you try to pump too much out of them.

I suggest these as an alternative to the HK...unfortunately they're above you price range. You can get a new 806 for a bit over 600?

Yep just a bit out of my price range:( I know I'm trying to buy a caddy for the price of pinto:D I found a Marantz SR5002 factory refurb for $299 with one year warranty, is that a good choice? I don't have to have one that will run 4ohm really I guess, but my 11ts are 6ohm.

I also found some Denon receivers in my price range. How would they do for my set up and how are they compared to HK,Marantz, Onkyo etc.?

Yes. Marantz are better about making rated power than most. The 6001 refurb for about $80 more gets you a little more amp and Audyssey.

What is so great about Audyssey? Isn't that one of those mike set ups that calibrates for the room and speakers? Would I end up turning that off and making the adjustments myself anyway, because it may not set it up to my liking? It's just out of my budget, and I wanna get the most bang for my buck. Is the Audyssey really worth the extra $80. No comments about Denon? I thought they were pretty good to. It seems that I've seen alot of reviews saying they were to bright? Thanks again for your advice, I humbly await more:D:D

If you can go a little higher, here is a nice deal on a Yammie from jr.com. Quantities are limited.

    http://www.jr.com/yamaha/pe/YAM_RXV861BL/

Add a nice two channel power amp and your set. You can buy a nice Yammie 7.1 at 90 wpc (RXV563), for around $300 from the same place, but no pre-outs except for the sub. From an ease of use perspective, you will prefer the Yamaha over the Denon. The Denon's can be difficult to set up; Yammies are really simple. Good luck.

You might be able to set up distance and levels yourself, but most people don't have the equipment available to do EQ. Some rooms don't really need it. If the 6001's not in your budget, then it's not.

I preferred the sound of Marantz when I was buying. The Denons in your price range have no pre-outs and don't make their rated power, if that matters.

Well after considering your words of wisdom and staring at too many receivers and stats, I placed my order today. I ordered the SR6001 Marantz:D It just seemed like too good of a deal to pass up, and after further research, the Audyssey really made it a no brainer. I just get to eat ramen noodles for longer than I origionally planned:o I will let you guys know when it arrives and I get it all hooked up. I'm sure some fellow newbs would find my opinion useful since there are alot of people new to this in my position as well.:) On a side note, I was very impressed with how knowledgable the person I spoke with at accessories4less was about the products. It was a pleasant surprise, especially considering how ignorant so many sales associates at the big box stores have proven to be.:D
