PS3 as a CDP

Are any of you guys using the PS3 as a CD player?

I've had my PS3 for around a year now, and my main uses for it are Blu-ray of course, and as a CD player. Now that i'm all set up with my new XPA-3 and all, i'm going to be listening to a lot of my music more frequently and at louder volumes.

But i was wondering what settings you guys have on the PS3 to get the best out of the CD's you're playing? That is if any of the settings on the thing matter, which i'd like to think they do, but i don't know, which is why i'm asking...:p

Well, this was a useless thread...lol

I guess we will have to look elsewhere and try other forums for this information.
No big deal though, the answer must be out there somewhere! :)

What do you mean, what settings? Most of the generics are covered on Sony, if not here already.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

The PS3 sucks as a source IMO.

I would be looking at dedicated CDPs instead of settings. Or maybe even a good DAC. But thats just me. No matter what settings I tired with the PS3. The sound was brittle and harsh. SACD playback was acceptable though. But considering most of my CDs are redbooks. It didn't do me any good....

    Just my $0.02

Never sounds brittle or sharp to me, must be the SDA-1Cs and Carver TFM-45 making sweet music no matter the source.

Funny that I prefer 2 channel SACD over multi-channel. Just sounds more realistic.

I'm also using my PS3 as my primary CD/SACD/DVD/Bluray player. In fact that's what I got it for and don't even use it for gaming at all. Sounds fantastic and I've never experienced any problem with harshness with it

I found SACD playback to be just like every other Sony transport I've heard aside from the 777ES. I wouldn't say it sucked but it wouldn't be my choice for a dedicated 2CH rig....but that's not really it's purpose anyways.

Just out of curiosity, and sorry for the slight derail of the thread, but how loud is the PS3? I own an XBox 360 and with a disc in the drive this thing makes so much noise it's unimaginable to use it as a CD/DVD player. I'm assuming the PS3's are silent? One thing that I can't stand is any noise coming from my CD player...

My X360 is at least twice if not 3 times as loud as my PS3, My DTV HD-DVR is louder than my PS3 60g.

I know the new 20 and 80g are quieter than my 60g, the 60 is not silent but better than anything else I have in my system with a HDD.

I have the 40g PS3, and it's practically silent while playing CD's, blu-rays, and games (i don't really play games on it though, i have my 360 for that...:D).

My Xbox 360 Elite on the other hand, definitely wouldn't use it as a CD player that's for sure. All though the Elite i have now is a lot less annoying than past 360's i've had, not quite as loud. Luckily i have the 120gb HD, and with the new ability to install games on the HD, the 360 is silent as well when playing games at least.

The only time the PS3 will get loud is when it gets really hot (say inside an enclosed TV stand with poor ventilation).
Then, the fan kicks in high gear and it is about as loud as the XBOX 360.

I've had mine for about a year now, and not once have i heard the fan kick in high gear. I do have it very well ventilated though, and it has never been hot, so i guess it's a YMMV sort of thing. I never want to hear that fan if it's as loud as the 360! :p

In my opinion, my PS3 sounds as good as any $300-$400 price point dedicated CD player, and you get the benefit of being able to watch DVD and Blu-Ray discs too.

If you plan on sitting back, closing your eyes and listening deeply, you will find that the fan on the PS3 will kill any truly discrete listening. Its about 45db SPL by itself.

Again, my 40g PS3 is silent. A couple of my friends have the 40g as well, and theirs are also silent as well. I've never once heard the fan in my PS3 and i've had it for a year.

But hey, this is my experience with it, apparently your experience is different.

Yeah. I have the 80Gig with the 4USB slots and the SD card reader. It can never be a reference player but it's just fine for movies. I guess I listen to movies pretty load but I like very low-key music. But I also have two SACD players I use for 2-channel audio.

I'm kind of glad i have the 40g then.
I've actually read that the 40g PS3's are very quite compared to other versions. But this was back when i bought it over a year ago and i haven't read much on it since.

In all honesty, i would love to try a stand alone CD player, just to see for myself how it would compare to the PS3.

I'd also like to try a stand alone blu-ray player, but that might be a waste, and probably not really needed at the moment since the PS3 does great with BD's.

The PS3 is the best BluRay value on the market for reasons of its versitility.

Yeah, that's what i've read, which is why i got the PS3 to begin with. Games are just icing on the cake for me, i prefer the 360 for games.

Like i said in my previous post though, i do want to try a stand alone CDP. I'll have to look into them and start reseaching. I guess Emotiva has one coming out this month, it will match my amp, maybe i'll try it out..:p
