Here's the check that was eventually sent to verizon (supposedly). The math is over my head (the math on the check, not the .002 cents ≠ .002 dollars :) ), but the story's on the web somewheres... The memo line still has me LMAO.

Awesome. Not sure if they are different, but I believe there is another guy who had a issue with Verizon back in 06. If I recall correctly that one was very similar, but wicked long w/ lots of swearing.

Guess I was right the first time, video has been taken down...yet was copied and reposted:

How sweet would it have been if Verizon got someone to calculate that nonsense and take the money from his account. That was awesome.

The last term in the check is a summation where n goes to infinity, so you can't really figure out what the final actual value is. However, as the denominator continues to get larger, the value of the fraction and so the amount you're adding to the value of the check gets smaller and smaller. And since it's getting smaller exponentially, it doesn't take long before the value of the fraction becomes insignificant.

The check would end up being for around $24.22.

I'm pretty sure the sum of 1/(2^n) as n approaches infinity is one (think about it - 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16.....). e^(i * pi) is minus one. Those two terms cancel each other out. THe check is for .002 dollars (.2 cents).

By the way, just because an equation, especially a summation, has an infinity in it doesn't mean you "can't figure out the actual value." You can't use simple arithmetic usually, but you CAN figure out the final value in cases where it is deterministic (such as in this case). It's been a good 8 years since I've DONE any of them so I can't quite remember how to go about it, but it's possible :)
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Yeah, good call. My math instructors (to say nothing of myself) would be embarrassed. Wish I had remembered my math classes before posting that one.

After I posted that, I looked and realized it's not e^2pi. Thought that was a two at first.

Uh I am pretty sure, if you listened to the dialog, that Verizon confirmed without a doubt that .002 dollars is the same as .002 cents. Sheesh. Stop spreading false math.

    .002 Canadian Dollars = .002 American Cents = 2 Cuban Pesos = 20000.002 Yen.

    ... bah, close enough! :P
