Are you an electronics junkie?

Since everyone else is asking these kinds of questions lately, I wanted to get in on the act!

Anyway, what I mean is, are new electronics like crack for you?

I experienced this again a short while ago. I got my grilfriend one of those Sony Nintensoft X-Cube Game Box 2 Station deals for her birthday. We brought it home, set it up and the first thing I did when I pulled it out of the package was smell it. I love the smell of new electronics. I know exactly what it is too. The smell of the oils from the plastics and the chemicals used to manufacture all the metal and plastic parts that make the smell. Most people find it distasteful and quite disgusting in most cases but it's like the smell of fresh apple pie or a freshly mowed baseball field or a pile of fallen leaves in autumn. I just can't get enough of it! My girlfriend has likened it to a drug of some kind.

I don't know why I like it so much. Maybe it's just the thrill of a new thing? Maybe it has something to do with getting the equipment I wanted? I don't know, all I know is that I'm a certifiable junkie when it comes to electronics. I'm not even allowed to go into electronics, toys or computer stores by myself.

So, are you an electronics junkie too?

The smell of hot electronics is actually ozone. Transformers create ozone which usually dissapates after the static electric charge in the air dissapates. Hence the reason your house doesn't fill with the odor.

As far as Navy ships smell, I have to disagree. Maybe ships that aren't full of stinky sailors and their stinky food or the stinky turbine fuel or jet fuel or the stinky bilge pumps or what have you don't smell so bad. I've been on a Navy ship (I'm not Navy personnel though) and they stink to high heaven!

Alot of the smells you find on a Navy ship are either people stink or various fumes from engine fuel, machine oils, cleaning solutions, paint, electrical components and disinfectants. Gear lockers and rope lockers have very musty, mildewy smells and the engine rooms reek of bearing grease and differential/transmission fluid which is quite unpleasant in any form. Not to mention the odors from the solvents used to clean, maintain and fire the munitions from the tubes, racks and guns.

I think you are one of the few people I know who say that they actually enjoy the smell of the ships.

The smell is great. I am a nerd. However, the smell of baseballs, my catcher's mit, and a new can of tennis balls is better.
And yeah, Navy ships are kinda nasty.

I admit, the tennis ball thing is weird, but for most anyone who plays a fair amount of tennis, the feeling is mutual. And now that it has been mentioned, I remember that my girlfriend and I like going into Home Depot or Lowe's or where-ever if for nothing other than the smell.

Disneyland is crack for me, not so much gear. Walking into the Pirates of the Caribbean, Hanunted Mansion, Space Mountian...etc. I love that place. Been there 3 times in the past week and going back tonight, again.

    Yep, Disney-Crack.

Yes, baseball stuff has an awesome smell! I love the smell of the glove oil in my baseball glove and the smell of the dirt in the diamond! I love how the grass smells when it's freshly cut, especially on the season opener or when it gets thrashed by someone sliding on it! Hell, I love baseball! I just can't stand to watch the teams bought with big money. There is no feeling of a game there.

Milled wood has a great smell too! Reminds of the projects I was always doing with my dad when I was younger. I spent a good portion of my childhood riding around on the carts in the home improvement stores with my dad.

I also like thee smell of a fresh cut lawn and the smell of a lawn mower while it's cutting the lawn!

This is going to sound weird too but I love the smell of a truck stop or diesel exhaust! That reminds me of camping trips I went on when I was younger and in the Boy Scouts!

Tire smoke too. Especially the smell of race gas or methanol. I love going to the races!

Nothing beats the smell of the smoke that curls out of the barrel of a high power rifle or big bore shotgun that has just been fired - intoxicating on a cold morning.

I like the smell of black powder better. But gun smoke is another neat smell. Not on mylist of all time favorites but certainly worth honorable mention!

I race RC cars, which run on nitromethane and alcohol. Good stuff. Don't get much of the burning rubber smell, but you definately get the burning fuel smell. Prolly the best place to go for this smell is the local dirt track. The track I go to runs microsprints, and that's quite a lovely mix of race fuel and dirt. Ahh, gotta love grit in your teeth.

It ain't racin' if there ain't dirt in your beer!

I was kinda reffering to the dirt track when talking about the methanol. But he alcohol dragsters at the drag strip have a good smell too! Nitro sucks though. It's nitric acid. It'll burn your eyes, ears, nose and mount and any other **** even skin. No sir, don't like it! Cool to watch though! The nitro cars at the strip that is.

    :D

When I pass the local track on the way home I open the windows, slow down and enjoy the aroma. I normally come close to getting rear-ended but it is worth it!

Another GREAT sound - yes!!!!!! Brings me back to Band Of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan.

I don't own an M1, but have shot them often at the range. A great big hulking classic capable of excellent accuracy with iron sights. We were shooting 55 gallon drums at 600 yards with regular hits. What did Patton say about it - "The greatest battle rifle ever made." or something like that?

Oh yeah - new electronics don't thrill me. Color me a thread hi-jacker.....but I'm not alone!!

Every time I remember smelling my electronics, it was not a good thing, fried my original Heathkit once during assembly and twice in the line of duty. But the sound and feel of removing new gear from their packaging does it for me.

The groans of Styrofoam against cardboard as you fight to ease that tight fitting pack out of the box. The squeal of the same Styrofoam this time releasing the heavy wall plastic bag that holds your new treasure. The soft crinkle of the plastic bag as you unfold its open end. And finally the almost imperceptible “shush” as you slide your new jewel out into your air. Ahhhh the bliss…. Damn I need a cig and a nap after writing that….

As for the smells… I’ll take my Lady wearing her favorite perfume and the bloom of a fine red wine in a large bowled glass, in either order, anytime… Eventually that always leads to a nap as well…
    More later,
    Tour...

It's not the speakers that have that smell Sid, it's the wiring. My dB components for my truck had super stinky wire too that smelled exactly like pot. I thought that it was the cardboard packaging at first but realized it was the wires that came with the speakers.
