You'd think that WMA's would work within Vista, but about 90% of anything I try to watch craps out indicating that I need missing codecs (which don't exist).

I'm WAY ahead of anyone that'll suggest to dump Vista, but I just need a fix for this piece of crap.........

Thanks for any help.

Did you try the latest DivX codecs? They have a free version you might try.

It all depends on what codec it is. Windows Media Player won't automatically download a divx codec, nor will it play DVDs without purchasing one.

I suggest you stop trying to work with WMP, and use VLC Media Player instead-

You could also cover damn near all the bases, and install the K-Lite codec pack - http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm

This should allow you to continue to use WMP, though I prefer VLC anyway.

Yes, my vote is also VLC, even any mpg files that has no marker plays fine with VLC.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Yep, I've had several files that even winamp would crash on when trying to play... VLC plays every one of them just fine.

Being way ahead, should also let you know. Vista is a failure, as is Windows 7 beta. Open source is the way to go.... I stop there... Not gonna argue with no one person.

To be fair, is this really a failure of Vista, or is it possible a failing of Windows Media Player or whoever/however the video was encoded?

WMV not playing in WMP is a Windows thing........Vista just bugs with layout and questioning every time I want to execute something........

    Disable UAC.

On the start button, search for msconfig
    Click on the "Tools" tab
scroll down until you see "disable UAC"
    highlight, and click "launch"
    Close all windows, and reboot.

    No more verification boxes.

I have no issues whatsoever running videos in WMP or Quicktime via either IE or Firefox in Vista. I've found Vista to be MUCH more reliable than XP ever was.....???

I'm agreeing with Brett, nothing but trouble on Vista (in my case 64 bit). Even VLM is buggy as hell.
There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

The tried and true method for fixing Vista is a Mac.
    Vista is a disaster.
I will admit that MS Office does work better on a PC, but I also believe that is an intentional conspiracy. :)
Media on the other hadn is a far different story, it's not even close!
I just purchased a used 2005 MacBook Pro for 200 buck to use for an extra machine.
I would NEVER consider buying a Windows based machine more than a year old.
