Need a little advice...

Hey guys, I need a little bit of advice on a job opportunity for the summer I've been offered. Here's the situation, I'll give you a brief explanation so it makes sense.

I'm 18, I'm in the first year of a two year college Information Technology (computers) diploma. I very likely can't get a 4 month summer job in my field this summer due to the recession and 10,000 "Technical" people being laid off in December in my province alone. So I am looking for something that will look good on my resume and create some decent income at the same time. My resume so far is:

Library Book Reshelver 1yr.
Cook - Burger King 1.5 yrs.
Chef - Local restaraunt - 1.5 yrs. + (currently working)

Would it be better for me to stay at my current job and make $7000 in the 4 months and make it 2 yrs. on my resume.

OR

Take a job in the next province for 4 months selling security systems door to door and make $20,000.

Thanks for the input guys.
I think Bananas are awesome fruit.

20k in 4 months in door to door sales? Someone's pulling your chain.

    I don't know much about IT, but I do know 20K is 16K more than 4K :)

Unless when you say in the next province mans you have offsetting costs to work there that would reduce that extra 16K a lot.

I mean your studying for computer tech, what good will the extra Chef duties do for you? TAKE THE CASH (this also assumes you can make 20k selling door to door)
    Dodd - Battery Preamp
Monarchy Audio SE100 Delux - mono power amps
    Sony DVP-NS999ES - SACD player
    ADS 1230 - Polk SDA 2B
DIY Stereo Subwoofer towers w/(4) 12 drivers each
    Crown K1 - Subwoofer amp
    Outlaw ICBM - crossover
    Beringher BFD - sub eq

Where is the remote? Where is the $%#$% remote!

20k in 16 weeks? I would recommend you look further into that. Stick with your current job.

I'm gonna have to say no on the door-to-door idea. That 20k is a ballpark figure for what you could make. To make that money though, you have to sell a certain amount. With todays economy, people aren't spending money as much...especially on things like security systems. That's something that most people can do without.

I say stick with your current job. Holding down the same job for longer periods of time always looks good on a resume anyway. It shows dedication, and willingness to stick with a job.

If you could realistically make $60K a year selling door to door, I think there would be scores of people raving about it everywhere you go.

One summer, I answered an ad in the paper for a "marketing" job that said I'd pull in roughly the same. I went to the interview and realized it was a door-to-door sales job. Somehow (I still don't know) I got talked into going out in the field with a group. I felt so bad after watching them for a few minutes, I didn't even ask to go back until they were done.

I'm here to tell you, they worked... HARD. I saw guys literally chased off of porches, doors slammed in faces, hollering, and general mayhem. They actually made a few dollars, but I'm thinking it would have been easier to make a dollar doing something else.

The scary thing about door to door sales is that you need to sell to be paid. If the opportunity was in a field you wanted to move into for a career you might want to consider it, but otherwise it's a tough grind for little if any return. You'd probably make more money cooking. Good luck!

Get a MASTER DEGREE once you finished you IT degree.

As far as job is concern, I would say NO on the door to door sales rep....the 20K in 4mo is a balony, it's IDEAL but not realistic. Keep your current job and learn as much as you can or may be......DO A REAL CHEF thing, go to school and make a BLING BLING.

I got a lot of respect for you for being an ADULT.....there are a lot of fools at your age.

Wow, thanks for the great responses! I value your opinions very much.

My gut wasn't settled on the position. And I ultimately phoned them up and turned them down. I think you guys are right, it is a POSSIBLE income for 4 months of selling. But like you said, in this economy? In the mean time, I'm searching for anything IT related to do this summer.

    Thanks again. :)
