edited February 2009 in Vintage Speakers
As I had indicated in some earlier posts, I went and looked at two pairs of Monitor 10s last night. The speakers were all in excellent condition as were the stands. Based on a recent vintage thread (Monitor 10 Crossover Rebuild Question) I gently pushed on each PR and got the correct response from each set of midwoofers.

The speakers were purchased around 1978 and still belonged to the original owner. They never moved from the location in the living room in which he placed 30 years ago. The original manufacturing travel tags are still attached to the back of the speakers!!! The tags have information such as model number, serial number, date of manufacture, etc.

I did not have my wife’s Jeep last night so the speakers are coming home with me this Saturday. I hope to have pictures of the quadruplets posted by Monday morning.;)

The model number given on the travel tag attached to the back of each speaker says Monitor 10. They were purchased new in 1978 by the current owner.

Picked up the two pairs of 10s today. The first pair are running in along with some new (old) speaker cables and a new digital cable. I'll have the second pair up and running tomorrow as soon as I make up another set of cables.

Pretty sure they have the Peerless tweeters. I'll post pictures in the next day or two. Need to figure out Photobucket first.

Here's a pic of some Peerless tweets...is this what you've got? If so...congrats...the Peerless tweets are awesome. What am I saying? Congrats even if they don't have the Peerless...;)

Nice...those are generally regarded as the best tweeter that was available in the Monitor series. I have a pair of 7A's that have the same tweeter...and they sound amazing. They're basically the same speaker, minus one of the mid-woofers. You should be very happy with those speakers.

    Congrats on the nice score.

I took pictures of all four speakers a few nights ago. The pictures were taken in the basement under poor lighting conditions resulting in lousy pictures. I'll shoot them again this weekend during the day. The tweeter picture came out OK though. It's the Peerless.:)

Oh yeah; I must have checked and rechecked a couple times on each speaker ...... 1 on the top, 2 1/2 on the bottom, 1 on the top, 2 1/2 on the bottom ...... :)

The fuse in the Monitor 10a's is an AGC-1....at least that's what dad's came with. He hangs on to everything and still has the first set of fuses that were in them.

Well I got home too late today to have any good light in the basement but I managed some half way decent shots. Still need to get the hang of the camera.:(

There (still) is a warranty registration card attached to the back of each speaker. I took the pictures with the grills off; all four grills are in perfect condition just like the speakers. The four original stands are showing a little wear though.

I think the stands may be the weak link in the design of the speakers but I'll save that for another post.

Ricardo- there is a fuse diagram on the warranty registration card on the back of each speaker. The diagram shows one fuse labeled HF and the other fuse labeled LOW. The HF fuse is one amp fast blow just like in the (sticky) XO schematic . The LOW fuse is 2 1/2 amp fast blow.

I told Ken at Polk customer support that I will generate a new XO schematic showing the two fuses when I replace the binding posts. The second fuse must be on the mid-woofers.

gdb- these speakers were purchased new by the original owner in 1978 or 1979. I believe these were the first iteration of the Monitor 10s.

Russ, those registration cards are really cool!!!!

x2 on that. Take special care to make sure those never get knocked off. It's probably extremely rare to see speakers that old, that still have the warranty cards on them

Those are in gorgeous shape though. They look brand new!

Thanks for all the nice words guys.:) I actually need one more 10 to complete a 5.1 surround system.

However, for now I need to concentrate on finishing the basement which will be my multichannel SACD / HT room (it took six weeks to clean the basement out and the four 10s to start filling it up again).:D
