Hmmm....23 mins. left. Should I go ahead and put down my offer? :D There's no guarantee that this CD is an early pressing for this series, which would have a gold-ish looking tint on the label side of the disc.

That's USD$2,000+ for that CD. This Pink Floyd title was amongst the first batch of CDs released by Japan's CBS/Sony to consumers back on October 1st, 1982, that fateful date when CD was first available commercially. Also, it only has 2 tracks as opposed to the later 5-track version.

While I think the price is ridiculous (and I've paid over $200.00 for an used CD  ), the buyer is buying more than just the music. Obviously, this particular version of this Pink Floyd title's rarity contribute greatly to the price. The "box obi strip", the blue paper band around the left side of the CD, adds significant amounts to the final price as well.

I will never understand collector's editions like this. If I want to own something, it's because it serves some function - looks particularly good, sounds particularly good, does SOMETHING particularly well.

Things like this, that are merely expensive because of their rarity but serve no other purpose (and in fact would never be used, since the act of opening it would "destroy" its value), I will never understand.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I'm confused. The seller CLAIMS outstanding SQ, but how does he KNOW, if it's never been opened?
I can understand the value if it was a master SACD, and then the record co. or Sony, cancelled the order but...???

I rescued this 3 disc set from a friend who was beating the discs to death:

    From Underground To the Moon

Some good tracks from live at pompeii, and a good, full version of DSOTM live. The packaging takes the cake, as it came in a Chinese silk box with cd shaped dividers that had the songs on each disc on them. And it was whatever # out of 5,000.

I just wish he had taken better care of it before I became care taker. While I'd never sell it, it would be nice to have it in relatively new quality in case the **** hit the fan and I was forced to sell it...

    HOLY f*#&^NG sh*$&&#*%!!!!!!!!!!!Sorry...lol

Wow...that's ridiculously expensive. Wish You Were Here is one of my favorite CD's...in fact, I was just listening to it earlier. Sorry though, I'm not paying close to 5500 dollars for it. Even if it does have free shipping from Japan.;)

It escapes me as to why that's worth it to anyone. My copy of Wish You Were Here was like...12 dollars? Maybe 15 dollars? It sounds great. Obviously not as good as that one sounds I'm sure...I hear it's going to be released on SACD before to long though. I'll just pick up that one...lol

It must be nice to have so much money that you can afford to drop 5500 dollars on a CD though. I couldn't even imagine that...that's more than my car cost...

So I wonder how it's getting shipped...will it be in a velvet lined padded case with a titanium exterior and two armed guards next to it at all times? :p:p

This is what I don't get about a lot of people. There are people out there, who have vintage muscle cars that are worth a quarter million easy...but half the time the owners only have them as an "investment". Damn...sell that car to someone whos gonna use it for what it's mean to do...drive!

That's what makes em worth so much....lack of use!
Actually that's the best investment right now is vintage cars.
For those who can afford em now is the time to buy.

The drawback to vintage cars is that in order for it to be worth that much money...someone has to have the money to buy it. With the economy going in the direction it's headed right now, people aren't really going to be looking to spend a quarter million on an antique car. They can be a really good investment...in a good economy, but in a bad economy, it's not so good. What's a quarter million car worth if you can't find anyone to buy it?

the reason for the value of the disc is simply this... fewer than 1000 copies were released of this and the beatles abbey road before sony japan was ordered by emi/sony of europe to stop making them. they did not have the rights to do so from the artists and the european lable to do so in the first place. legal infighting over them delayed the reissue of them until the late 80s- 1987 in the case of abbey road. those that have these cds hold something that is exceedingly rare as 99.9% were opened and listened to.

it is estimated that perhaps only 75 to 100 copies of this disc exist in its condition, the abbey road disc in the same condition is worth somewhere around 6-8k. these discs are rarer than the beatles "yesterday and today" butcher cover lp

I understand the rarity of the disc, but I still maintain that assigning a high value to something JUST because of its rarity, foregoing any inherent function of the item itself, is a silly thing. Gold isn't valuable because it's rare, it's valuable because it's rare AND USEFUL (as a conductor as well as a thing of beauty). This CD is simply valuable because of its rarity, it holds no inherent value.

A point well taken, but value and beauty are in the eye of the beholder as it were... I would not spend a dime more that 100 bucks for such an item as a cd, but if I had the cash I'd spend 5 million+ for a 1961 ferrari 250 gt lusso
    or a Duesenberg...

The point is I am certain there are things every one of us would assign an exhorbitant value to. for this guy it was a cd we all would give no more than 20 bucks for. to him, he just bought a picasso.;)

Very true. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

My dad collects antique space toys, and robots. He has robots in his collection that he's payed upwards of a thousand dollars for. I don't see why anyone would be willing to pay that much for an antique toy robot, but it's his hobby. It's worth every penny to him.

The same thing with my mom, except she collects Wizard of Oz toys. Some of the ones she has were insanely expensive, but it's worth it to her.

Ya look at it from another perspective though, does anyone really need a 10,000 dollar stereo? Of course not...it's a luxury. Granted high end audio equipment is a slightly different thing, in that it does have a real function, but the concept is sort of similar. Different things are worth different amounts to different people. One mans trash is another mans treasure.

How hard would it be to get a CD shrink-wrapped if it has already been opened? Did they use those stupid bar code seals across the top back in those days? I seem to remember that being a relatively new thing in the 90s to cut down on theft.

Anyway, it certainly seems it would not be that hard to counterfeit a seal and shrinkwrap a CD. Presto, a virgin, never played CD. Sounds like just the product for a late night infomercial. Make big bucks by turning used CDs into collector items.

I doubt that's the case with this one though...it is entirely possible, but I rather doubt it. That looks like a pretty distinctive piece of shrinkwrap. I'm sure there are ways of telling if it's fake as well.

I can see the value of buying antique toys and wizard of oz stuff (I've spent over 1k of oz stuff for my wife. Got a signed munchin poster and autographed witch book for her that cost a few bucks). But a CD? Maybe in a few years (when they stop making CDs), but I just don't see it now. I'm sure there are a couple of unopened Wham CDs out there that weren't produced very long, but that doesn't make them worth 5k.

I guess I kind of worded that wrong. I can see the point in spending that much on antique robots or Wizard of Oz stuff...what I meant I guess is that I personally would never be able to bring myself to. If that's what you're interests are, then yes, it's very worth it.

Whoever it was that spent 5500 dollars on that Pink Floyd CD...it was worth every penny to him I'm sure. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The advantage is, that someday that CD may be worth even more money than it is now. Just like with all of my dads robots and my moms Oz toys.

It's a gamble though, because it's every bit as likely that the CD will lose it's value over time with the way the economy is right now.

You didn't word that wrong, I just quoted you because of the oz stuff and what I spend on it (and I just figured out how to use the quote feature. check the testing area for me). But old toys and oz are good examples of things that were made back in the day were people weren't thinking about the future of items. I just don't see a CD ever becoming valuable (but I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. but also, something like this is probably speculation on future value).
