Anyone here do any modding to their xbox? I've been doing a little reading on it and it seems like so much work for very little in return. Anyone see or experience anything different?

I have a friend that used to mod the original Xbox's back before the 360 came around. It never really appealed to me a whole lot, but they were pretty cool.

He could do all sorts of stuff within games. He could change graphics around and stuff...Like in Halo for instance...had had it modded for a while so that when you shot the pistol, the round that came out looked like a rocket launcher round...lol... He could also rip games straight onto the hard drive.

It could be fun to mess around with, but like you said, it's not really worth it IMO. It's not like you're getting a whole new system or anything like that.

Well what Xbox are you talking about? If you are talking about the original one there are a ton of things you can do. Add another hard drive. Rip games directly to it. The best program out there for ir right now is XBMC (Xbox Media Center) which lets you do all kinds of things. Movies music pictures. XBMC was the launching ground for what the current 360 does now.

It was funny because Gates let it slip in an interview on how he was going to use the XBMC ideas for the new 360. What was funny to the modding/modder world is that basically Gates admitted to modding an Xbox. There is no other way to use that program without modding it.

As for the 360, it is pretty straight forward unless you have the new lite-on drives. If you have the older drives I would say the total mod process is about 30 minutes if you know what you are doing and have the right equipment and tools, 1 hour+ if it is your first time. The longest part is taking the 360 apart, which sometimes can be a real PITA. And you also need a VIA SATA card. Which runs about 15 dollars from NewEgg.

The new Lite-on drives require soldering, and a bunch of other crap. Technically way over my head.

I was trying to find a way, either through software or hardware, to play the games you can now copy to the hard drive on the 360. I've heard that there are 2 wires you can solder inside which will achieve this, but after looking online I have yet to find anything about that.

So your trying to play them without the disc in the drive?

Well first off you need to look here first----> http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showforum=169 This is where you will get all the detailed information you need.

BUT before you even venture down that road you need to figure out what DVD drive you have in the first place. Look Here
    > http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/Xbox_360_DVD_Drive_Comparison.htm If you have the BenQ looking drive than you need to take off the face plate off the front of the 360, you will see a little round hole, shine a light in the hole, if you see a white wire you have the BenQ (Thats good) yellow wire means you have a Lite-On (Bad....soldering required)

And FYI- you still need the disk no matter what to play a game that is on the Hard Drive. Unless you download it off of Xbox Live.

I wanted to avoid using the disk, so if thats not possible then for my use, I don't see a point in doing anything to it.

I can confirm this, Xbox will ban your console from Live if you tamper with it . Happened to my neighbor as he had to go buy a new one.
