HOw will this subwoofer work with my system?

Hello all...

I've been researching subwoofers for the last few weeks. Here is what I'm looking at:

I currently have CS1, Monitor 30's (Front) Monitor 50's (Rear) with my Onkyo SR606. I am looking to add an Energy ESW-10 as a sub. How will that match with the system? Setup is in my family room 22x18.

Thanks,

Pycroft

at over 3000cf I doubt it will satisfy your LFE needs for home theater.

Need to step up to a 12"350watts+ at a minimum. Check out HSU, outlaw and SVS. There are others but these are the ones I have experience.
Speakers: SDA-1C (most all the goodies)

I would then like to see if people could rate the best subwoofers for less than 250 bucks. I am looking for 150RMS +. Size does not matter. I've looked at Infinity PS10, Energy ESW-10, Velodyne CT-80, and others. I know very little so would appreciate any and all imput - especially if you use them yourself. I will use it for 80% home theatre, 20% music.

    Thanks,

Any reason why you are using the 30's as your fronts and the 50's as your surrounds? Seems backwards to me, I'm assuming it is due to a space restraint of some sort? Just curious, not trying to be critical.

kds60a2000 has a warranty extension. Have you had any problems with your optical block?

I really have no space restraint - I always thought bookshelves should be used as fronts, and towers as rears? I'm new to this...is that backwards? What are the pro's/con's to having it switched?

And Timmy - I'm not sure I understand your question. What is an optical block? Was that question even meant for me?

    Keiko -

It's out of my price range. Unless someone is selling a used one for around 200 bucks, I'm off the market for the DSW. I'd love the suggestions to keep coming, especially if you've used the ones above.

Towers=Fronts, Bookshelfs=Backs, or you can just get all towers (If money is no problem) but that also takes up a lot of room. Fronts get most of the signal in a 5.1 setup so you want to send all that sound to the most capable speakers that you have, which would be the towers.

Would love some suggestions: There is a local guy selling a Cerwin Vega LW-12 sub. It seems to fit what I need, and I think Cerwin vega is a good brand. Any comments on this sub?

    Thanks again all,

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Not the Vega. The CLS-12S doesn't have the best electronics. I love the sound that mine had but it's not reliable. It has the auto on/off feature but no on/standby switch so it will randomly go off in the middle of something with no bass and the only way to get it back on is to flick the master power a couple of times. Mine is currently sitting on my porch waiting for ups to pick it up and never come back to my house ever. Get a Polk/Klipsch/JL Gotham.

Yeah, I'd switch that setup around. The 50's would do much better up front, just as the 30's would do much better in back. The 50's are a more full range speaker, where as the 30's are somewhat limited, so they'd be much better off being switched around.

Personally, I'd stay away from the Cerwin Vega. CV's are LOUD, but that's about it. The sound quality just isn't there. If it was exclusively for movie watching it might be ok, but if you listen to any music at all, I'd look into something else. CV's are loud, and have a lot of boom, but they're not punchy really in the upper bass regions, and I've always found them to not really be to accurate. They tend to sound sluggish and kinda muddy in my experience.

One of my friends dads is an absolute Cerwin Vega nut...he owns like 4 pairs of them. His newest ones each have two 15's, a 6.5 inch midrange, and 1.25 inch tweeters. They're loud as hell...and they'll pressurize the hell out of your room...but the sound quality is terrible IMO. Great party speakers though when volume is the only concern...as is the case with him typically.

250 dollars, I'd have to go with the current price at Onecall.com and jr.com for the Polk505. 300 watts, 12" 28hz low. Slot port. For 250 its hard to beat, for over 500 there are a lot of good subs out there. Velodyne, SVS, HSU, Sunfire, etc.

I Know your budget is a problem just look for sales..especially online. If you don't mind the color white you can get the Boston Acoustics HPS-12HO (300 watts, 12 inch, about 46 pounds) Definitely worth 249? Free-shipping?

That Yamaha mentioned above is not bad for the price either.

I'd really think about the Polk PSW505

I'd have to agree with cnh on the PSW505. For the price point, that looks like a damn good sub. Never heard it myself...but there are quite a few people on board here that have it, and are thrilled with it.

+1 to the boston acoustics 12. I have two of them and for what I paid for them I think they are hard to beat for the price. Very musical. They have very tight accurate bass and is solidly built at around 55 pounds. One call use to have them in the midnight color.

I agree, the B.A.s tend to be very 'musical' for 12" subs. I really think that's their strength. And I own one as well.

Got mine for almost nothing...! Also have the previous XB6 B.A. which I plan to add to the mix.

    Check this out:

    Polk PSW 505: 12" x 300w; 28Hz $225

    Sony SA-W2500: 10" x 100; 28Hz $80 refurbished direct from Sony

    Take a look:

I have one 2500 and it performs way above its list price of $100. I just bought a second one (refurbed) today. You could get two 2500s for the price of one 505.

As cnh can testify, 2 subs are better than one.;)

One PSW505 is better than two entry level sonys. Plus the PSW505 goes below 28hz, I know it's advertised as that, but I've tested it at around 23-24 and it gets there.
