How can you tell the difference between a 2A and a 2B? Did they both come in the black studio format?
I understand that the 2A and 2B use slighly different drivers, but can you tell the difference without looking inside?
Everyone seems to say that the 2B is one of the better SDA models. Where does the 2A rank?

2B's have oak top and base.. 2A's do not. both sound almost identical. i've own both. both are good SDA's.
if they are the black studio version. i think the oak is black instead.. but from the top or bottom you should still be able to tell if they are A's or B's.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Also, 2A's only came in blade/blade configuration. 2B's can be blade/blade or pin/blade."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche -
SDA-2A's weigh 65 lbs., were vinyl clad, and have about 6" of vinyl exposed on the bottom front where the grill does not reach the floor. They sit on an integral base smaller than the speaker itself. They use the SW121 12" Passive Radiator, SL2000 tweeter and 2 MW6510 6-1/2" mids. 2A's are 12" deep X 15" Wide X 39-1/2" tall. Impedance was shown tobe 5 ohm.
The SDA-2B comes in a 65lb all black vinyl studio version, and an 80 lb Oak Veneer or Walnut Veneer version. The front grille went almost to the floor separated only by the thickness of the wood veneer base. The base was not smaller. The sides were cloth covered also. The 2B used the same SW121 and SL2000, but used a MW6503 Stereo Driver and MW6511 SDA driver like the SDA SRS 1.2 and 1.2TL. The crossovers were also different (newer and more sophisticated). The 2B was newer of the versions and the BE1807-B crossover can be modded to use the RDO198-1 "TL" tweeter. 2B Studios are 11-3/4" X 15-7/8" X 38-1/2" and Standards are 11-1/2" X 16-1/2" X 39-1/2". Impedance was shown to be "greater than 4 ohms"
Certain serial numbers of the 2B can also be bi-amped with the AI-1; the 2A can not.
I've owned and have original manuals for both. In my opinion, the 2A can not be made to sound as good (smooth and linear from 20-20K) as the 2B.VTL ST50 w/mods / RCA6L6GC / TlfnknECC801S

Thanks for the great info. I'm still waiting for my SDAs to arrive. From your description, I am pretty sure I got the 2As. Not as nice as the 2Bs (or the 1Cs that the seller backed out of), but still psyched!
