If it were me...
I'd say not to encode in anything lower than 256kbps. I've found musical artifacts even all the way up to 256kbps sometimes. 'Tis the nature of compression.... Also, I use CDex to rip my files and Blade Encoder to encode them. It's all a matter of personal preference, really... I know people who won't encode at less than 320kbps.... hell, for certain CDs I've just left them as unencoded .wav files to really enjoy the music (example- for any Enya CD. Due to the full range of sound in Enya, you end up looseing a lot no matter what you encode it at.). Hard drive space limits what you do as well. When I had my 8.4gig HD, I only encoded at 128. Now I've got a 40gb, so I redid everything in 256kbit.
Current MP3 statistics for nadams:
Files: 1242
Bytes: 10,546,505,901 (that's 9.82 gb)

Nice read Steve-o.
Considering my hd went Tango Uniform last night, and I'm in the process of re-installing/restoring, I'm going to heed your advice, and give it whirl.
Thanks for laying it out in plain English.

I hear ya nadams, that's why if I do serious listening, it's CD only. I don't even mess with the mp3s. But if I'm using my iPod or in the car with my Empeg, 192k is just fine for me.
The Blade encoder is nice, used that before. I just prefer the sonic characteristics of Lame over anything else, and most people that try it agree.
Glad I could be of assistance
Oh, and I'm up to the 25+Gig range for mp3s!! heheheLSi 9/C/FX

Good stuff. I've been using EAC with LAME for a while now. I like the variable bitrate encoding.
I'm up to 29.3 gigs. Mostly collected, not ripped. Time for another hard drive. heh -
I've been using if for a little while now too, after Steve responded to a question I posted concerning MusicMatch. EAC+LAME produces MUCH better results than I was getting using MMJB at 256kbps, with VBR and smaller files. Thanks, Steve!
