It'd probably be less expensive to use an unpowered zone 2 or 3 and a good ext two ch. amp. Just a thought.

I have considered this, especially since I have a couple amps I am not using. My problem is space. I don't have any space left in the AV cabinet for yet another amp.

Of course, if Comcast would get their act togther and eliminate the need for a cable box in order to receive digital cable I would be fine.

No it does not, you will lose your back channels. I have to say that zone 2 or a zone 3 is not worth is unless you get an amp to power those speakers unless you want to say put speakers above a pool table or in your exercise room. But if you want to use it for a patio then you could be ok. After all how many times will you use the zone two and still be in your theater wanting full 7.1 sound?

If you had a big party and want to show off your system I don't think the guest would figure out that your running 5.1...and since you have amps then go ahead and amp the zone two. It all depends on the set up you need.

Zone 2 is not a factor since I have a useless amp in my onkyo. I will use that amp for my kids theater room. Hey got to keep them out of mine:D

So far I really like this reciever...just too many features that I did not expect and the sound quality is just great compared to my old reciever. Durring the superbowl I heard the fans scream for both teams in chants. I never heard this before. The 9 band equalizer on all channels is just mind boggleing. Then it lest you have 6 sets of stored memory of your settings and still allow you to switch to 14 different sound fileds. I played a few DTS concert dvd's and it made my wife sit with me way too long:mad: Just to hear things this clear is so refreshing. Also it allows me to hook up my MP3 player and it controls the tracks (well somewhat) an ipod would be better for that but it has a usb port in the front. 3 Hdmi ports in the back. My Wii is great through this. IMO this is the best sub 500 buck reciever to be had. Sure the elites may have more power but if your going the amp route then does that matter or do you really need the THX that they have? For the extra 3-400 bucks I think I'll buy an emotiva amp and call it a day.

    ....

My comment was really meant for polktiger since he mentioned that he was having a hard time finding a receiver that would power a 2nd zone while maintaining 7.1 in the main zone. It was intended to show that would be the better way to go rather than limit AVR choices possibly passing up a good AVR.
With my Onk 805, as long as you don't use the powered zone 2, running zone 2 and/or 3 to an ext amp will not take away any channels. You can still have 7.1 in the main and both zones 2 and 3 running.

Having the 1017 you know the clearity and the amazing eq that the reciever has. I picked up the 1018 today at worst buy for 480.00. ........
    This may be a keeper:D

I can't think of why it would not be staying with you, but the only other thing I would look at would be the Yamaha 663. It was able to be had around $350-$400 for a while not sure what it can be found at now. About the same as the 1018 in price and features. Some find the Yamahas bright with Polks YMMV. GOOD move running away from the 863 for $800 (not much more to offer over the 663).
