I have been slowly replacing my speakers. The first thing I did was get a new center speaker. I bought the csi30 and returned it for the csi40. Allot more punch with the csi40. I have just ordered Rti 70's and am not sure if I should go with the Fx line for rears, or the Rti38's. Do the dipole/ bipole make that much of a difference?

Bi/Di makes a big difference in 5.1. I haven't setup 7.1 yet so I can't comment on that. Bipole is similar to direct radiating except for that the sound is emitting from both drivers aimed away from your listening position. You can still localize on the sound but it is more diffuse than just a single direct radiating speaker. Dipole is a whole other experience. In dipole setting the sound is very diffuse and hard to localize. It really depends on the movie genre to what setting I like. Action flicks I usually set to bipole. All other flicks I set to dipole.

If you are using them in the rear and there is some distance between the wall and the listening area use the 38's, if there is little room use the F/x's..

There are many threads on bipole/dipole vs. direct radiating surround speaker preferences, and there are many of us polkies that prefer direct radiating rear surrounds over bipole/dipole.

Me? I like my FXi30's as rear surrounds and switch modes depending on the type of source material I'm playing. Now, I have a 6.1 setup. In a 7.1 setup, a lot of folks like to have direct radiating rear surrounds with bipole/dipole side surrounds - if I ever upgrade to 7.1, I might also consider this type of setup and use the FXi30's as side surrounds with direct radiating as rear surrounds, but for now I'm extremely happy with the FXi30's as rear surrounds.

I just wanted to say thanks to all who responded to my post. I am now understanding the differences between the two speakers. Thanks again!

    db,
    Can you define "some distance"?

I have over 10 feet, I've tried both kinds of speakers. If it was less than 5 feet I would have used the F/x series. Just my preference based trying both.

    dbournival,

From dispersion standpoint that does make sense.

Not sure why the f/x's can not cover both distances just by swapping from bi- to di-pole mode, but I'll play and see for myself...

    Thanks for the reply...
