Bought in 1988. Every time someone hears them, they always say how sensational they sound.

Anyway, I always thougth I had 10B's, but serial # tag on back says:

10 195104

I have literature that shows the Monitor series including the 10B. I also have printed off the Monitor 10 info from polk's website.

10B shows 2000 tweeter, while the 10 liberature shows SL2500.

Can anyone say for sure which I have? I assume 10 since serial # plate says 10.

I've read up on here about replacing caps (capacitors?) and other things. How much change might this make for my speakers? They are in excellent condition and have always been on the first floor (not hiding in the basement).

Recommendations?

Thanks.

J

Welcome to Club Polk. Can you post a pic of the tweeters? That would help a lot. Also is there a fuse on the back? The cap/resistor upgrade is definitely worth while. Let us know where you are. There may be a Polkie near by that could help with the XO upgrade.

    I'm in the Chicago area.

    All black tweeter. Says:

    Polk Audio
    Silver Coil dome

I do NOT see a tiny pinhole in center of the tweeter.

Looks like the typical tweeter seen in the 10B and 10 documentation I have.

If the tweeter is all black then it shouldn't say silver coil on it. Can you pull it and see if it says SL2000 on it?

My Monitor 10Bs were bought in 1985...I still have the receipt. But the tweeters were translucent-dome SL2000s.

    This has me curious too.
My 10A s do have a fuse on the back. (bought around '80)
I recently replaced my tweeters (from Polk)
I replaced one tweeter 20 years ago so I had two different tweeters.
1 is all black with pinhole in center. A white sticker says made in USA
2nd tweeter is silver with clear dome.... says SL1000 7/22/88

Any idea what the black one is?

Also, is it wise an what should I do for XO upgrade?

    Thanks

The back of my speakers simply has the red/black posts for wire connection. No fuse or anything of any kind.

By all-black tweeters I mean the metal part is all black. The tweeter itself is that "dirty celophane" color.

The thumbnail posted is definitely NOT mine as it's all black (including the tweeter dome) and has the pinhole.

You have the SL2000. You should get the RDO-194 from Polk. There are plenty of threads showing the XO upgrades. Let us know when you are ready.

Since my serial #tag has "10", are mine Monitor 10's vs. 10B's?

Also, the 2 docs I have show 6 ohm or 8 ohm. Which are they? (AV receiver wants to know).

6ohms nominal. If you have to choose between 4 and 8 choose 4.None were really 8ohm. A lot of vintage Polk's were listed as 8ohm compatible, but were actually 6, and would dip to 4 or below at certain frequencies.

I just picked up a pair of 10Bs at the local Goodwill ($50, cabinets a little scuffed, drivers clean and sound GREAT). I'm curious - they seem to have the SL1000 tweeters (brushed aluminum), but have fuses in the back. I thought that only the peerless have fuses - am I mistaken about that?
