Feeling like crap again...

I am usually not one to complain about my life on internet boards, BUT since this is a male dominated forum I felt like I could get away with it here a little bit.

I had a real nasty condition about 5 years ago, that left me in bed for over a month. The pain would come and go over the next year, that had me getting a vasectomy in the hopes of having my condition go away. It's called Epididymitis, and to give you an idea of what it is, basically my balls swell, and it feels like someone gave me a real swift kick with a steel toe boot. Yeah gross huh?

So for 5 years I have been pain free, and now it is back. Problem is, I have to work. There is no way around me staying off of my feet until it goes away, which is the recommended treatment....besides a heavy dose of pain killers and antibiotics. So now the suffering begins, as I walk around the hospital, while my balls feel like there is a ball and chain connected to them.

So if I get snippy here, excuse the retorts. It's my groin talking.

Sorry about how you feel. That really must suck. I imagine it as being extreme blue balls.

Just wondering, but why can't they remove the tube/structure completely?

That's a drag. I know there are many causes to that condition.

A friend of mine, he's a paramedic so this kind of stuff interests him, told me about a guy he knew in high school who had this condition where urine would back up in the tubes that your man juice travels down when you are making babies. Normally, urine is sterile and it just cause pain and sometimes a blockage that just has to work its way clear.

But this guy's condition would come with fevers and such and he'd be out of school for days, sometimes weeks. The doctors couldn't figure it out until one time he had an abscess. A curious doctor took a sample and biopsies of some tissue and grew a culture. The culture grew E. coli.

Well the doctor asked questions about what he'd been eating and his fever symptoms and such and there was nothing out of the ordinary. Now E. coli grows in the lower intestines of most mammals, including people. Well, they couldn't figure out how this guy got E. coli because the usual sources, including less-than-sterile public bathrooms didn't pan out. They told him where E. coli comes from and well, long story short, that outted him. He was apparently **** and sexually active but not using protection with his partners. Because of his urinary tract problem, E. coli worked it's way in to his testicles to cause the problems he was having.

Now that's a 3rd hand story so how true or fantastical it might be, I don't know for sure. I'm not a doctor. I may have even gotten some details wrong but it seems plausible to me. All I know is that when I heard that story, it skeeved me out so much that I never forgot it. Hell of a way to "come out" though.

Probably doesn't help you there, Sean. But your story just reminded me of that story. Apparently other infections like Chlamydia and Gonorrhea can cause the problem too and you don't even have to have sex with someone infected to get those infections either.

I hope you get better soon. I had a hernia that was pretty low in my abdomen when I was kid and the abdominal swelling caused a similar condition and it hurt like no other pain I ever felt. I wouldn't want to go through it again and I don't envy you in the least. I'll keep you in my prayers for a speedy recovery.

Hope it ends soon. I cant imagine how that would feel and dont really want too to be honest. Maybe try an ice pack to freeze the little fellows into not hurting so much? On the other hand probally best check with the Doc before doing that. Perhaps they can give you a long acting local anesthetic?

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

First off Jstas, and everyone else thanks for the kind words.

Yeah E-coli is actually one of the problems. Although that has not been the case for me. STD is another one, but heck I am married and I know...well you know we are both monogamous. No freaky sex...so e-coli is out, and so syphilis and gonorrhea.

It is just one of those things. I seriously thought I was over it after the vasectomy, but I guess not. Thanks goodness I only work three days a week. but even sitting sucks because everything is swollen.

So back to the urologist for me. I should have them test for e-coli since I am in the medical field. But I highly doubt that is the case....you never know though.

Just keep a close eye on the situation--I would be a little worried about testicular cancer developing. I know I"m suppose to be offering some support, and I do, just saying stay on top this condition brotha.

There are more treatment options available now.

    One of them being: http://www.lyrica.com/

It could also be helpful for the OP of this thread. It helps relieve nerve pain, no matter what the cause of it. I used lyrica for about 6 months for nerve damage in my neck and shoulder. It was no miracle drug, but helped with the pain.

Well I am a doctor and you should see a urologist....if you are then you should see a better one. Treatment is directed at the cause...in the 30-40 y/o age it can occur from straining (weight lifting) or urinary reflux, and treatment is usually 2-3 weeks of antibiotics and NSAIDs for swelling.

Well, who should Avelanchefan listen to: Hobbyguy, with all his fancy facts and city knowledge from years of schooling and training, or his fellow Polkies who offer the wisdom of wims, wive's tales, and gut feelings ?

    Yeah .... that's right !!

Hope you feel better, AVfan; it doesn't seem like you should have to suffer with this condition for too long.

Thanks again everyone. I worked last night and it went better than I thought. The pain was there but man it was a crazy night so I did not sit and dwell on it. I am sure I will pay for it today.

As for seeing a different doctor, I had forgot about our neighbor being a nursing manager for a urology group at our sister hospital. So my wife talked to her last night and she is going to get me in this week.
