Well, I figure I'd let it all out here and see if anyone else has been bent over by human resources like I just was.

I've been working for my company for 4 years as a packaging chemist and really need a change of scenery. I look at the job postings weekly and have never once found one that I wanted to apply for. Well, a few weeks ago a good friend of mine (an associate director) approached me and told me he's posting a brand new position of its type in his department and he feels I would be a perfect fit. He spoke with my current boss who couldn't agree more, even though he really doesn't want to see me go, and he urged me it would be a great move. Then, a few days later, the guy that would be my boss approached me and asked if I'm going to apply and interview. He is also a very good work friend of mine, which helps, but I don't play those games, seriously. The job is EXACTLY what I am looking for and I feel I would have a big passion to do it. I would actually use my brain for a change and get to develop testing methodologies using lots of hi-end equipment. I would be working with a great group of people, would actually like showing up for work, and would get a nice $8-$10k pay raise. What more can you ask for, right?

Well, a few days ago I got some great news from my associate director friend. Turns out, since I got a promotion 9 months ago I'm still not eligible to apply as our company makes you wait 12 months before you can apply for another internal job. The icing is I've sat at the same desk for 4 years and have done the same job, only my title changed and I got a measly 5% raise (thanks again, HR!). It's the SAME *&%$#*& job, but HR doesn't see it that way. He even went to talk to his boss and they both fought with HR but they wouldn't budge. Lovin' it.

Well, I find out today who did get the job and now I'm ready to start hurting people. She is a nice person but has ZERO experience in the job she just got, while I have 4 years under my belt. What's great is they told me only two others applied for it internally and it needed filled quickly. They told me they HOPE she can do the job. Yeah. You know, if the job market wasn't so crappy right now I'd consider flipping HR the bird and walking out. I know for a fact others have broken the 12 month rule but not for me. Also, did I mention I got the highest performance review for the last two years out of 120 people in our department? It's not like HR doesn't know who I am

/egotism off :D

Believe me, i know EXACTLY how you feel. This exact situation happened to me at my job twice. Almost the exact same situation but in a software development environment. Had the total approval and good wishes of my boss and the guy who was going to be my boss in the new position, and then things kept 'comming up' which caused them to delay it. They told me if I waited 6 months I'd get the position, I waited and it never came. Exactly the same way, they gave me a title change and small raise to try and keep me there. Then another position came up, and things moved far enough along that they started training me up on the other job, then took the rug out from under my feat. They gave me the reason that there was a 'hiring freeze', so they woulnd't be able to hire my replacement. Even though we already had enough people on my team and way too few people on the other team (as two people had just quit). They told me they would give me more responsibilities in my current position, but the more I talked to people the more they seemed intent on just paying me lip service and keeping me in my same place. That was enough for me, so I DID end up walking, and I've never been happier.

That's a STUPID policy. At my company I know HR pushes to retain employees and to promote/hire from within. The practice you mentioned seems completely opposite.

Hopefully things will work out for you in the end.

Look on the bright side, your the first person I know of that's got any raise at all. 5% is an above average raise in these economic times.

    Sup, Noel!

Yes, but that was almost a year ago and that was for a LONG overdue promotion, which is also pissing me off to no end. My immediate supervisor put me in for a promotion 18 months before they gave it to me, and he did it multiple times. Now all I can think about is if that f*cktard manager of mine would have promoted me at ANY point in the first 15 months of the recommendation this thread wouldn't exist.

My wife will likely get no raise this month. She got a new supervisor in April and she's a hell **** that only got the job over my wife, because she used to work with the bank Pres 5 or 6 years ago. My wife has worked there for over 10 years, and until the new chick, was the only person in Marketing with a degree, and her's is in Marketing from one of the top, if not the top, business school in the nation, IU's Kelly School of Business, which is actually supposed to mean something in Indiana of all places.

Hell I just wish I had a job.

    Life is suck!!!

Perhaps the job wasn't meant for you to have, regardless of how good it may have appeared. As George said, this was a blessing in disguise. Now you have a better idea how much you are valued by the company.

BTW -- How cute is the girl who got the job?

Right now there's no real pressure on employers to do anything other
than cut pay and screw people. They are perfectly happy to use
unexperienced (read lower paid) people to fill postions. Or outsource
tech positions to unexperienced people with poor englisgh skills(India).

Sorry to hear but like others said be happy that you are working. There are rumors going around our office today that we might get our office shut down due to the company buying another company that does almost the same work as we do. There making a big anouncement at noon today. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Unless they learn anything from mismanagement decisions like that from companies like Tweeter and CC and the resulting downfall.

Why do you think I got a new job? Tired of the corporate screw job I was getting at 12 years of service and less than a pittance for a raise.

That sucks, but don't let it affect your job performance. It sounds like you've got multiple supervisors that have you on their radar as someone who can get stuff done and is a good employee. Keep showing them that you are that guy.

Another position (or maybe that same one if the girl doesn't cut it) will become available and you'll be there, ready to jump on it.

Sucks that you got caught up in HR BS by-laws, but you'll have your 12 months in your current position soon enough and hopefully won't get screwed again.

    Good luck.

They were DEFINITELY out to screw people though at my place, so after testing out retirement for 2 years, I ended up getting a job with a 60% raise.......lol........EFF THEM!!!!!

They were nit-picking rules to give her first chance. Hang in there.
It does sound like they like your work. But HR is HR. I've had more than
one go round with HR on stuff like that.

My company has the same policy as Mazeroths. And they seem confused as to why all these folks under 40 are leaving the company. (Even in this economy)

It's sad, but it keeps the bean counters happy until they release the true financial numbers, since the mediocre people they keep can't do the work.
