I want to have a sub again, but I need ideas

Well I want a sub for movies. I am happy 2 channel, but movies wreak havoc on my mains. I was thinking a sub in front of the couch that looks like a coffee table. Anyone have experience with a sub in the middle of a room? I am thinking no corner loading or nulls?
Thanks
Ben

Hm...I've never heard of anyone doing this before...but I'm very interested in hearing how well it works. I would think that with it being that close to you though it might be overpowering your other speakers. Bass waves need more of a path before they get to you to sound the best, because of how wide of a wave it is. At least that's how I've always understood it. Cool idea though, and your point about not having any corner loading and such does make sense.

What happened to your sonosub with the Dayton Titanic MKIII?

I still have the sono sub, but it is too big for where I am now. I only have two corners available, and they are on either side of my couch. I want to do some custom in-wall speakers and a 5 foot tall sub doesn't fit the bill:( I want it too be inconspicuous. I have also entertained the thought of installing it in the attic with the driver and the port poking through the ceiling, but I am worried about nails popping in the sheet rock, and it would be too permanent. I was thinking of placing the woofer either at the end of the enclosure point at the side wall with the port down firing, or have both down firing. I don't like port noise.;)

Have you considered something like the MTX Lolita?

That sub is only 7" high, and is designed for fitting under tables, couches, beds...or whatever else you can fit it under. Not sure if that would work with your couch or whatever...if it would fit though, something like that would probably work.

I'd imagine that with the speaker building experience you seem to have, you would probably be able to construct something that would beat the pants off the MTX as well.

I have a Dayton titanic III that I am going to use. I am just not sure how. I have thought of going sealed for music, but it doesn't dig low enough for some HT. When my sono sub was about 6 feet tall I could dig really deep with it, but that was based on a 9'^ enclosure with a 30 inch port. I may make a ported box and stick it in a corner then dress it up like furniture with veneer. This way it wouldn't have to be too tall, and it wouldn't take up much room.

My PSW1000 is in front of my TV, which puts it in the center (horizontally) of the room, and I use it as a stand for the center channel speaker. Works great. Turn it up and you literally have chest pounding bass. No problems at all.

How about a 'buttkicker'? Amazon has them for $144+$20 s/h. You could probably hide these things under each end of a couch, or an end table.

I have some head scratching to do. Something will pop into my mind. I don't feel like experimenting with my sub. I just want it right the first time. My sono was right the first time, but it is way to big for a living room. I may have to flip my listening area around.

Ben, if your couch is against a back wall, or a few inches from it, you might be able to get away with a wedge enclosure behind the cough, with a port out one end, or use 2 12" or 15" passive radiators tuned to the same as your port.

I'll ponder that Idea. If the port noise is absorbed by the couch that would be a good thing. Out of site is a good thing too. My only concern is the wave length of lower frequencies.

they will pass right through that couch as long as there are no solid panels in the back of it, also leave at least an inch of air space between the couch and the box.

    Ben,

Just an Idea here. In my old house I added a DSW Pro 400 because of it's relatively small size and placed it under a coffe table adjacent to a couch and my main listening seat in the main listening area. I really enjoyed having the sub right there beside me in the main listening area. It made you feel like you were right there in the movie. My current layout at my new place does not allow for it, otherwise I would do it agian. It didn't overpower the other speakers at all. I adjust the volume to blend it in, but still provide a more localized effect.

I would think that some of the new Micropros, or the MiniVees or some of the small Definitive Tech subs would be good for this and could be easily placed under an end or coffee table.

Thanks DF, but I have the driver already. I don't want/can't afford to spend money on a sub for HT.

I know you're just trying to point out what you see as a mistake, but let me refer you to post #1.

Buying a sub instead of making one is always an option, especially when you buy used. He may already have a driver, but it can always be re-sold. If he doesn't have the money now, perhaps he should wait until he does in order to own a better quality sub.

The Depth i with the right mods can be the best sounding coffee table sub ever. Ben likes mods. So I suggested it.

    Go excuse somebody else . . .
