If you are running seperates now...a good place to start would be tube pre-amp...

If you are using a receiver now,I would recommend a Solid State 2-channel power amp "inexpensive used" and a tube pre-amp. combo.

The pre-amp. seems to be the simplist and the least expensive way to get that tube feeling.

    Agreed...works well sound very good....

A Dodd ELP is a good way to get into tubes

That is how I got into tubes myself...
Great place to start, and the Dodd ELP`s are great little pre`s, IMO

I've been in this hobby for only a couple years and after hearing so many positive things about tubes- I tried a $300 entry level tube preamp in 2007 and loved it. I moved up to Modwright tube pre-amp and this thing brought soo much more weight and presence to the experience. Last month I added a tube cdp to the mix and this brought a warm analog sound. Not sure which is my favorite tube.

When I joined this forum I had an Onkyo AVR, Onkyo DVD player and Monitor 70's.

well im running a 5.1 receiver/amp....could I couple a tube pre-amp before it no problem? if tube pre-amps accept standard L+R inputs I could then output straight to the receiver/amp no?

    Thanks all for the suggestions.

Anymore longterm ones?...I like to skip entry level anything...budget is not robust enuff to shelf stuff... or go straight to high end....but will work OT, read, research, and wait for entry/mid "quality" that I can keep or build around slowly if I have to. Dodd ELP model on that level? sorry for my entry paranoia.

Also it's ok to mix tube pre-amp with SS?
Altho I am scared to ask(pricey I just saw modwrights)any suggestions for tube amps?

I have some pretty okay tube gear, and I still like the Dodd ELP !
    It`s a keeper , IMO..

I thought of getting one for my shop rig, or the set up that I`m putting together for my offie at work..

6922 tubes are very plentiful, and do make a difference in sound....which makes it fun to tube roll....just remember that cables DO make a difference......IMHO (and experience)

and to answer your question...no, do not put a pre amp before a reciever/AVR...that is an integrated unit
you need to get a stand alone amp

An ELP and a ss amp will/can provide a good combination.I have one that I'll be posting in the FM in about a month.FWIW, just be sure that you use a good tube(s),whether NOS or current production.Just my .02 worth.

If you want to go straight to a high end pre that you won't need to upgrade in the future, check out a Joule Electra. I heard one that belongs to a forum member and it is very sweet. http://www.joule-electra.com/
