AMP Question?

Ok last night my brother and was telling me I should not spend extra money on a 5ch amp and just by a 3ch for the fronts & center and let my denon 3808 ci power the rears. He said the rears will get much more power because the 3ch will
be taking care of the fronts & center.
My question to you guys the xperts, how true is this theory or should I just cough out the xtra bucks and get the 5ch amp.:D

What he says will work, of course, but I don't know that you'll get "much" more power...

It's a perfectly reasonable theory and it's something that a lot of people do.Speakers: Polk LSi15

Thanks a lot guys but the thing is the 5ch I really wanted but it's back ordered till feb 28 and I have been waiting for it since dec '08. but I'm afraid I get the 3ch and the fronts over power the rears that I can bearly hear them. I'm new to the amp world so don't laugh at me, like how I'm laughing at myself. lololSamsung-55 LED

You won't have any problem; just make sure you calibrate all speakers; can be done by ear, but using an SPL meter works best._________________________________________________

That 70 wpc is going to give you less than 2 dB extra headroom....that's a lot to pay when you have a multi-channel amp in the Denon....TNRabbit

It isnt the 70 watts thats the big difference, theres alot more to it, you have your denon that has everything crammed into one package, and the emotiva that is actually larger than your denon, and its just a amplifier. Alot more than 70 watts of power! I have a onkyo 805 and went with a emotiva xpa-3 and was blown away.. In every aspect it was a upgrade. Just watching tv is so much more 3D. Now Im ready to upgrade the speakers!

I am only running a 3.1.. From what I have heard, you could get by with the xpa-3. But also I think you would hear a difference from using the xpa-5 vs using the denon to power your rears. If I were you, if you are running a 5 channel, get a 5 channel amp to power them, because eventually you will be looking into a 2 channel amp to power them anyways.. Although u can get the xpa3 for now and get a xpa2 when u have the money ;-).. But thats a ALOT more expensive option..Living Room setup: Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH, Krell KAV 300i, PS Audio DL III DAC, Tyler Acoustics Taylo 7u, Dynaudio Audience 120C+, SVS 25/31PCI, B-P-T Clean Power Center, Ps3, Panny 50" S1 Plasma, Tekline speaker cables, Audio Art interconnects, and Pangea power cables.

+1
One other thing to consider though when powering a setup with multiple amps is that each amp (incl the amps int he AVR) may have a different gain. Which means that it is possible that when you adjust the volume that it doesn't adjust equally between the frort stage and the rear (if you have it configured that way).
In some cases it may not be noticeable, in others it may be a distraction. You might have the speakers all calibrated at one volume setting, but that can change when you turn it up or down.
Probably not a big deal, but still a potential issue. I haven't read too many issues like that though.____________________

I had my 3 front amped & let my receiver when I had one, handle the back, I noticed no difference in the volume they put out.
I noticed a BIG difference in the volume once I hooked up the backs to my 5 channel amp. So DO NOT listen to your brother, get the 5 channel amp for all your speakers & be done with that upgrade.
Since he has never had one, he just doesn't know, and those that don't know, don't know they don't know!:Dtrinidesignz wrote: »Ok last night my brother and was telling me I should not spend extra money on a 5ch amp and just by a 3ch for the fronts & center and let my denon 3808 ci power the rears. My question to you guys the xperts, how true is this theory or should I just cough out the xtra bucks and get the 5ch amp.:DMarantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
Being too impatient leads to bad decisions & in the end more money being spent/wasted then if you had waited & gotten what you truly wanted the first time around.
Just hang on, the amps will be back in stock soon & you can do it right the first time around.trinidesignz wrote: »Man now I'm asking myself should I cancel my preorder of the 5ch and take the 3ch or just hold on for a month again. Decisionsssssss!!!!!!!
